Ornamental Aluminum Fence Vs. Wrought Iron Fence
I was born and raised in the Philadelphia area, like anyone growing up in an older city I was a custom to seeing wrought iron fencing everywhere. Iron working dates by from the 14th century, and I assume we began to make wrought iron fencing shortly after that. Wrought iron fencing does however require a lot of maintenance and you need to be a professional welder to install it. The price of iron is very costly and almost impossible to ship because of weight, so it can not be mass produced and offered at a reasonable price. In this day and age of technology, companies like Jerith and Delgard have introduced an attractive alternative to wrought iron fence by using aluminum alloy instead of iron. Ornamental aluminum fence has the traditional wrought iron look without the required care and maintenance. This is because of two main factors, the finish coat and the nature of aluminum as metal.
Most aluminum fence manufacturers use a technology called powder coating to color and protect their fence’s finish. Powder coating is a process where a layer of powder is sprayed onto bare aluminum then it is placed in oven where the coat is baked into the metal. Unlike a normal spray on paint, powder coat does not chip or flake. The process of applying the powder coat is very environmentally friendly too. Jerith Manufacturing uses a powder coat they called FencCoat.
“To prove the durability of our powder coating, we have tested it extensively. FencCoat endured 3,000 hours of harsh salt-spray and humidity resistance, as well as 5 years of continuous exposure in Florida.”
Jerith is so confident in their FencCoat they guarantee it for the life of the fence. When choosing an aluminum fence, I recommend only going with a fence with a powder coat, a spray on finish will un-doubtable chip. You can find Jerith’s powdered coded products at Http://www.DoylestownFence.com
One of the greatest advantages of an aluminum fence when compared to a wrought iron fence is that aluminum will never rust. Aluminum is very light in weight and very strong. Each aluminum fence manufacture uses a variation of aluminum called an alloy. Jerith uses an alloy they call HS-35 which they claim to be the strongest among all manufactures. Their normal residential aluminum fence can hold up to 350lbs of pressure without causing damage to the fence and 1000lbs for the commercial grade fence.
