Glued To The Tube

by Andrew Beene

Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays, what I consider holy days of obligation. Once I plop on my La-Z-Boy with a big bag of Cheetos and oversized Coke tumbler on hand, people should know better than to bother me. With the blessed boob tube as my altar, remote control as my rosary, I begin my sacred ritual of watching my favorite series.

Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays: Dexter, Weeds and Skins. Think of any other series that can sate one’s appetite for good TV entertainment, chances are you cannot name any more. Each one of the three shows combines different genres – drama, comedy and crime – into a series guaranteed to have a religious following. I can only wish my flat screen plasma TV won’t need repair in St. Charles, MO and be left sitting in any of the TV repair shops in St. Charles, MO lest I miss an episode and go mad.

Genius creators/producers have turned me into a blind follower of the above mentioned shows and caused me to have at least four TV repair shops in St. Peters, MO on speed dial. Clyde Phillips, Jenji Kohan and Chris Clough must have been on something when they came up with concepts for their brilliant brainchildren. Below are but short descriptions of my top 3 shows. Here’s to hoping your box wouldn’t be up for LCD TV repair in St. Charles, MO or LCD monitor repairs on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays.

Dark and Deadly Dexter Blood spatter analyst during the day, blood-thirsty killer by night. Dexter Morgan is considerably a modern-day Robin Hood, hell bent on justice regardless of the means by which it is achieved. Quite an unlikely hero he is, a serial killer guised as a good looking good doer. The lead character is enough to draw you in, add to that the not-your-average killings portrayed in each and every episode. “Dexter” is sure to satisfy your bloodlust.

Get High With Weeds “Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky tacky. Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes all the same”. If the show’s opening music can’t make you break into song or at least hum along then there’s something seriously wrong with you. “Weeds” is a comedy-drama that pokes fun at the superficial suburbia. The title of the show is suggestive of the characters’ dealings with marijuana as means of livelihood and of the residents of suburban areas’ likeness to indistinguishable weeds. The Botwins make day to day living seem rather exciting and the unpredictable developments of both the characters and the storyline can get anyone hooked, even jittery up until the next episode airs.

Skins Sex and drugs surely sell; take it from the British teen drama series. More than just portraying the wild ways of today’s Bristolian young adults, “Skins” manages to expose the struggles of the youth in an entertainingly fast-paced manner. Giving new meaning to ‘beautiful disaster’, the show tells us that being young can be fantastic yet disastrous at the same time.
