A Guide to Updating / Resetting Your Digital TV Equipment
Digital TV Boxes and Digital TV's are similar to computers, similar in the way a computer on occasion requires rebooting or a software upgrade.
Due to the very large number and variety of Digital TV and Digital Box manufactures and models, this guide is general. The guide applies to Freeview via TV Aerial, BBC Freesat and Sky equipment. Please refer to manufacturer's equipment manuals for specific and more detailed information.
The requirement to Update / Reset (particularly during the transition from analogue to digital) is routine and does not require any technical knowledge.
The process is straight forwards and most equipment is "smart" i.e. when "Set-up" is selected via the "Menu Button" on the remote control. The equipment will offer "On-screen Prompts" by following the prompts the equipment will update itself.
Some common reasons requiring an Update / Reset include:
Missing channels, the channels (most likely, will have been reassigned to new numbers, or occasionally ceased broadcasting). This will require an Update / Reset. The TV mast which serves your TV Aerial (or a secondary mast) is being transitioned from analogue to digital. Usually this procedure happens in a number of stages and over a period of several weeks. Each stage will require an Update / Reset.
The TV mast is having its existing digital channels reassigned to new positions. Usually this procedure happens in a number of stages and over a period of several weeks. Each stage will require an Update / Reset.
The box or TV requires a software update or additional channels are now available.
Even new equipment (as little as one day old) may require an Update / Reset.
Occasionally equipment will "lock-up" or "picture freeze". In this instance "power down" the equipment by unplugging it from the mains and leave disconnected for 10 minutes. Reconnect and Update / Reset the equipment.
After a power cut it is good practice to carry out an Update / Reset.
A common issue customers have (particularly until fully acquainted with new or unfamiliar equipment) is "REMOTE CONTROL CONFUSION". Digital Boxes only operate via the A/V function of your TV. If you are still accessing channels via the number buttons on the TV remote, then you are in analogue mode. To locate and access the digital reception you may need to repeatedly press the A/V button on the TV remote. Ensure the box is turned full on and not in standby mode. You may find the channels are available on two A/V positions (usually the 2nd A/V position is for HD channels. IMPORTANT REMINDER: TV Remote for the master functions of the TV and Box Remote to change channel and to access other box functions i.e. recording and playback.
Batteries in remote controls do require regular replacement. Remotes can continue to work on failing batteries, but do become quirky i.e. the range reduces, some functions fail to respond, some functions respond to the wrong buttons etc.
Finally - Retain your Instruction / Set-up manual, or request a replacement from your supplier. Many manuals are available online in PDF format (ensure search includes the precise model number).
