Take a Broad View to Training Your Dog <br> <br>Have you ever heard someone say, "Oh, Rex doesn't misbehave at home, we have trained him to sit in the kitchen for 10 minutes." after Rex has just toppled you over with both paws outside of Pets Mart?<br>Have you ever taken your dog to a friends house and all the sudden Fluffy seems to think that it's okay to jump on the furniture and generally go crazy in that house?<br>Dogs are great at discrimination. When we teach our dogs to "sit," do a "down" or a "stay" in our living room, they learn to do just that? to sit, do a down and a stay in the living room. They get used to the place, sounds, smells and the amount of distractions in any given place that you are training them in.<br>They like to group all of the sights, smells, and sounds of one location together into what is called an incentive package.<br>The best way to get your dog accustom to many different areas, is to take Rex to many different areas. I would suggest taking he/she to a park or a friends house and spend some time training Rex there. When you take the broad view of training, you are asking your dog to perform the same commands in multiple venues.<br>How to Broad Train<br>Step 1: Before you begin, make sure your dog can follow basic commands consistently, such as "sit," "stay," "down," and "come."<br>Step 2: Next, find a place outside of the area you normally teach, where there are a few more distractions than normal, and take your dog there.<br>Step 3: Let Rex smell, run around, and check out his new environment first. Then, practice your sits, stays, comes and downs, but this time, use really tasty treats.
