The Rifle of the Future, Today
The 1970's Steyr Aug, a rifle ahead of it's time, now redesigned for the 21st century. Now made in the USA by Microtech Small Arms Research, its sure to be the favorite for the civilian market.
The Microtech Small Arms Research STG-556 is one of the most anticipated new rifles for the US civilian market. The STG-556 is an American redesigned Steyr Aug bullpup rifle. The STG-556 rifle makes completive shooting no problem, with faster point and shoot, and the weight balanced in your shoulder. The STG-556 rifle has proven itself as the superior tactical rifle by over a dozen countries around the world; in fact, many new designs are still based on the Steyr Aug.
The STG-556 rifle is designed to be almost completely ambidextrous and includes a shell ejector as well as a charging handle. In addition to the ambidextrous features, the STG-556 has the ability to change barrels in seconds for tactical use or for easy maintenance. Since the beginning of Microtech, the quality of their knife line has been second-to-none, as far as law enforcement switchblade, so it comes as no surprise that they would remake the Steyr Aug above and beyond what is already on the market.
The Steyr Aug had a very limited civilian market in the USA, due to a series of import bans, and the fact they were only allowed to enter the country a handful of times, mostly for law enforcement agencies. The original Steyr Aug rifles are sold used for well over three thousand dollars. The Microtech Small Arms Research STG-556 sells for fewer than two thousand dollars, which is much more affordable to the average shooter, especially when their heart is set on the bullpup designed rifle.
The STG-556 rifle has managed to secure a place in the civilian market, due to the high praise of the limited STG-556 rifles that have made it to the market already. The MSAR staff then took it a step further, with the design of the STG-556 magazines, which are made of a synthetic material that is completely resistant to chemicals that would destroy most polymer magazines. The magazines work with other model firearms, although other magazines will not work with the STG-556 rifle.
The selling point for most shooters is the integrated CQC 1.5x scope, factory zeroed. The majority of competition shooters use a variety of CQC, or Close Quarter Combat, scopes, which are designed for speed and precision to be maximized for every scenario. The factory scope can be removed in seconds and other optics can be attached using the integrated Picatinny rail.
The STG-556 rifle will be the civilian bullpup and is sure to become the up-and-coming new rifle. With a large variety of calibers (9mm, 40S&W, 45acp, 10mm, and 223 Remington), the STG series rifle is sure to have a place for all types and calibers of shooters. From my experience with the MSAR STG-556, these rifles are built to be rugged and reliable. Despite the fact many design ideas came from the 1970’s Aug design, these rifles are in a league of their own.
