Overcoming Premature Ejaculation

by Peter James Field

Premature ejaculation happens when a man reaches orgasm and ejaculates faster than he or his partner would like during sex.

PE is by no means a rare problem. Many men experience it at some point in their lives. It is thought to affect between 30 to 70% of all men at one time or other, and is the most frequent sexual difficulty or 'sexual dysfunction' reported in those younger than 40 years of age.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no set amount of time that constitutes premature ejaculation, but it is often considered to be before sexual intercourse begins, or soon after (within about one minute of penetration). Experts say the average length of intercourse is not as long as many people think it is. There are very few men that last longer than 12 minutes during intercourse.

Although it can be a difficult and embarrassing topic for many men, it is a treatable situation. Sexual dysfunction, like premature ejaculation, can sometimes be caused by a physical problem, and it's worth mentioning this issue to your physician, especially if it is a frequently recurring problem, or one that you have struggled with your whole life.

But there is very often an underlying psychological and/or emotional trigger at the root of premature ejaculation.

Anxiety about sexual problems is very common. Often worry about having a sexual difficulty -- or worry that a sexual problem will happen again -- is the very thing that causes the problem. It really can help to seek outside assistance. Professional hypnotherapy, or good psychotherapy, can be very useful in this area.

When it comes to premature ejaculation, there are various useful techniques that can be employed:

Deep breathing -- Premature ejaculation can be triggered by short, shallow breathing that accelerates the hearbeat. Practice deep breathing techniques to slow down your heartbeat and refocus your energy. Try taking a nice, deep breath and holding it for three seconds before slowly releasing it. Be sure to practice this outside of sexual activity before trying it out in the bedroom.

The Stop-Start Method -- This method involves stimulating the male and stopping just before the point of orgasm. Take the time to relax and calm down. After taking a break you can recommence stimulation, once again bringing yourself to the brink of orgasm before stopping. At first it's best to practice through masturbation. This will allow you to learn about your point of no return and develop some techniques about how to prolong your sexual activity with a partner.

The Squeeze Method -- Similar to the Stop-Start Method, the Squeeze Method requires you or your partner to squeeze your eraction at the base when you are on the brink of orgasm. You should first practice this technique on your own through masturbation, as with the Stop-Start Method. Once you have mastered it on your own, you will be ready to test it out with your partner.

If premature ejaculation is adversely affecting your life or relationship, you can work on resolving this difficulty. Many men employ the above techniques with great success. Working with a hypnotherapist who is experienced in 'sexual hypnosis' and therapy, or with an experienced psychotherapist, can be really effective, and can also help get things into much needed perspective.
