How to Make Your Own Chandelier
Make your living room sparkle like a palace…
One of the earliest forms of ceiling light was the chandelier. They first appeared in medieval times and were used as the main light in the room. In the next few hundred years as technology improved in glassmaking and metals, designs rapidly improved also and chandeliers became something often considered just for the upper classes. Now there are some truly spectacular chandeliers in most castles, palaces, museums, concert halls and stately homes that are priceless.

Wouldn't you like your own chandelier? Well here is a very simple recipe for making your own:

Ingredients:

You will need some wood, some rope, some nails and some candles. You will also need a hammer, a lighter and some strong hooks.

Method:

Take some of your wood and cut it into two long pieces, maybe about as long as your arm. Then take another thicker piece and cut it to about half the length of the others. Place them together with the long pieces in an 'X' and the shorter piece sticking out perpendicularly from the centre of the 'X'. Nail them together in the middle so that the nail goes though the long bits and into the bottom of the shorter bit. Next drive one or two nails through the ends of the arms a couple of inches from the end (or just judge it by where you want to your candles to be) so that they point up in the same direction as the shorter bit of wood.

Next you need to screw hooks into the top of the short piece of wood, into the ceiling above where you want the chandelier to hang and into a wall at shoulder height next to where you chandelier will hang. Place your chandelier on the ground below the ceiling hook you have attached and run the rope up to the ceiling and then down to the hook on the wall. Leave an extra few feet of rope for tying off. This style of interior light is simple but gives you a basic, rustic light addition. Modern ceiling lights are based on this simple design though.

Finally, attach your candles by driving them down over the nails you have sticking out of your chandelier, light them and then hoist you chandelier to the height you want and tie it off at your wall hook. All you need to do to replace your candles or blow them out is to untie the rope and let it drop to a height you can reach.
