Doyle Brunson - A Living Poker Legend

by Des Martinez

Doyle Brunson, also known as Texas Dolly, was born on August 10, 1933 in Longworth, Texas. He has a 40-year reputation as a professional poker player. During these four decades, he has been the Poker World Champion and has written many poker books. Doyle Brunson is the first poker player to have ever won $1 million through poker tournaments. He has also won 10 World Series bracelets in his career. A record that he shares with Phil Hellmuth and Johnny Chan. To make the record unique, he is only one for four global players who have had 4 consecutive World Series wins. Doyle Brunson began his gambling career by taking part in illegal games held in Exchange Street, Texas along with a friend, Dwayne Hamilton. Later on the two of them traveled through Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma taking part in bigger games and meeting other professional gamblers like Sailor Roberts and Amarillo Slim. Dwayne Hamilton left the group after some time and left the other three who for the next six years gambled on practically everything. Then they made a trip to Las Vegas and lost it all. That broke up the partnership though the three remain friends to this day. Doyle Brunson lives in Las Vegas.Besides his success at the game itself, Doyle Brunson's book Super/System, was also very successful and is considered by many as one of the best books on the game of poker. The book was first published in 1978 and for the first time the average individual was able to look at the game the way a professional gambler would. A sequel, Super/System 2 was published in 2004. Doyle Brunson is not the only contributor to these books but it includes inputs from many other professional players like Mike Caro, Bobby Baldwin, David Sklansky, Joey Hawthorne, and Chip Reese. Besides these two books, Brunson has also written Poker Wisdom of a Champion, a book that was originally titled According to Doyle. Doyle Brunson is still active on the world poker scene and in 2003 he won his 9th gold bracelet. In 2004, he finished 53rd out of 2576 players in No Limit Texas Hold 'Em Championship as well as winning the Legends of Poker World Poker Tour that earned him another $1 million in prize money. His winnings continued into 2005 when he won his 10th World Series of Poker bracelet. In doing so he tied the score with Johnny Chan who had also won the same series for the 10th time.Doyle Brunson's nickname, "Texas Dolly," is a result of mispronunciation by Jimmy Snyder who was expected to say, "Texas Doyle" when announcing Brunson but read the first name incorrectly. The name got stuck and his friends in the gambling world simply call him Dolly.
