Why I Appreciate My Private School Experience: It Has To Do With The Uniforms For Girls
I went to private school and while I attended I hated it. There were certain elements about it that were fun, such as Bible class, but for the most part it was the uniforms for girls that made it hard. While my other friends wore spaghetti straps and tube tops I had to wear girls school uniforms which were starchy and uncomfortable.
There were always girls who tried to distinguish themselves from the rest of the crowd. One girl named Jackie always tried to hike her skirt up without the teachers noticing, or unbutton her shirt one extra button on hot days. Usually she was reprimanded and given a detention. I liked Jackie but I didn't want to get in trouble, so even when all the other cool girls tried to do like her and stayed an hour after school for it, I ignored them and left with the entire afternoon free.
I did have a couple of other friends from middle school who went to the public high school, girls proud of their freedom, who I saw and admired on the weekends in their public school fashions. I had plenty of clothes to wear for the weekend and I went shopping with them sometimes, but I never wound up spending as much money or time on clothes as they did.
I remember one day when we were at the mall. Kristen said, "Did you see Haley's new Forever 21 jacket, how Hank was like admiring it in bio on Thursday?" Sasha said, "Oh my god, I know! It's like not even that cute." And so the rest of that afternoon we hunted for jackets that were cuter than Haley's so that Hank and other boys like him would ogle our jackets and admire how pretty they looked on us. We had fun shopping, even though we didn't find anything we really liked, but I began to think that maybe I was glad I didn't have to deal with what Hank would think of my jacket. Jason Phillips liked me not because I wore, but because of who I was. And plus, my slightly uncomfortable uniforms for girls made it even easier to get dressed in the morning; I didn't have to think about what he would like to see me wear.
This realization struck me late, close to the middle of senior year. But by the end of senior year I realized I didn't resent private school; in fact, I might have even been glad that I attended.
