Playing it Safe with the Sun2012

by Walter Fanne

One of the more enjoyable things that you can do is to spend time at the beach with friends or family. It is also a place, however, that often has hidden dangers that need to be considered as well. That is why it is important for you to understand some of the basics of beach safety and how to make sure that your nice day outdoors is not marred by some kind of problem. Such problems are rare, particularly if you take the following cautions both before you go out to the beach and while you are there.

When you are swimming in the ocean, one of the problems that you need to be aware of is the possibility for rip currents. You should familiarize yourself with how to recognize these types of dangers from the shore and avoid that area. It is also important for you to understand what can be done if you happen to get caught in a rip current so that you do not fight against it unnecessarily. Once you are in a rip current, you will be unable to swim back to shore but you can swim to the side in either direction until you are out of the current. Once you are in that area, you will be able to swim back to shore safely. If a lifeguard is in the area, you should also alert them to the presence of the rip current and if you are not a strong swimmer, it may be necessary for you to tread water until the lifeguard is able to come to assist you.

Another potential danger that is associated with the beach is overexposure to the sun. There are plenty of options that are available to assist you in the enjoying a day out in the sun without overdoing it. Wearing a high quality sunblock is certainly something that you would consider but there are also plenty of rash guards shirts that also give you protection from the sun. Those types of swim shirts for men and women not only provide you with additional protection from UV rays, they protect you in other ways as well.

Many of us also enjoy having a casual drink while we are at the beach but you should use extreme caution if you plan on doing so. If you are going to drink alcohol, avoid getting in the water because it can mar your ability to swim as effectively. A little bit of alcohol can also impair your judgment and can lead to disaster, if you're not careful.

One other suggestion that I would have for you is to avoid any problems with marine life that can cause you harm. Avoid areas where sharks are regularly seen and if one is seen in the water, leave the area. You should also avoid jellyfish, as they can cause considerable discomfort. Of course, most people are able to weather a sting from the jellyfish without having any serious reactions but it can still be quite uncomfortable when they occur.
