A rental car is a vehicle that is rented from a company for an extended period of time at an agreed upon price. Every day, thousands of travelers rent cars. It is simply part of traveling for many people in the United States and other countries across the globe. However, some people may wonder how renting a car works.

There are a few different reasons why a person may want to obtain a rental car. The first is due to travel. Often, a person may travel to a faraway city by taking a plane flight. Once at the destination, the easiest way to move around may be renting a car.

Secondly, a car rental may be obtained due to either an accident or a car theft. The driver would use the rental as a temporary substitution until that person's main vehicle is either repaired or replaced. Often times, it is the car insurance policy covering the damaged or stolen car that pays for the rental.

A car can be rented from a rental agency through one of three methods. This includes in person at the rental agency's office, over the phone and over the internet. Through any of these means, a contract for a car rental can be agreed upon. However, at most agencies, obtaining a rental over the phone or the internet may require more steps that must be finished in person.

When communicating with the rental agency, a few different things need to be agreed upon. This includes date and time the vehicle will be picked up, how long it will be used for and what rate will be charged for the rental.

After this has been ironed out with the agency, additional steps will be required. This often involves presenting the rental agency with a driver's license and possibly other valid forms of ID. It may also require signing the contract for the rental in person. Once this has all been done, the car can usually simply be picked up at the location specified by the rental agency and used for the duration agreed upon.

A driver should be aware that using a rental usually involves paying a number of different fees. Only some of these fees can be avoided. First, a flat fee will be charged each day the rental is used. Second, a fee may be charged based on how many miles a person drove with the car during the rental. Fees related to taxes and car insurance are also extremely common.

Fees may also be charged due to certain things a driver neglects. For example, if the gas is not topped off before returning the rental to the agency, the driver will receive a fee. If the car comes back overly dirty, a cleaning fee will be added to the tab. Lastly, if the car sustains any damage during the driver's use of the car, a rather large fee will likely be incurred.

Certain people may not be allowed to rent a car. Usually, a person has to be at least 21 years of age to rent a car. This is due to the fact that 16 to 20 year old drivers statistically get in more accidents due to risky driving habits. There may also be other reasons why a person may not be given a rental. Not having a valid driver's license or having a history of driving related arrests is another common reason.
