The Basics to Orthodontics

by David Patullo

The field of dentistry is always going to be a huge hit as there will always be people who need help with their teeth or some type of repairs done. More and more people are choosing to take better care of their teeth, and one area that many people need is orthodontics. This is a specialized area of teeth and mouth care and involves re-aligning them if they are crooked. Orthodontics is the field of straightening teeth with either retainers or braces. These apply pressure to the teeth and help realign them into their proper place. Many people are worried about what their smile looks like and that leads to needing orthodontics.

History

The beginning to orthodontics and the use of braces can be taken all the way back to the year 400 B.C. which is when Hippocrates began studying and writing about attempting to straighten teeth that were crooked. This procedure began being utilized in the 1900's, and was first used my Dr. Norman Kingsley. He began writing about braces and how to correct teeth that were protruding from the mouth in the 1850'a, and later on in 1890, Dr. Angle began realizing how important straight teeth actually were. Dr. Angle has become known as the "Father of Orthodontics".

Significance

Oral health has and always will be important, and orthodontics is an important part of mouth care as well. Patients rely on this field to help with their smile and help with their teeth. Having a better smile and straight teeth can help someone feel better about themselves. Having teeth that are crooked and misaligned can result in several problems such as bite problems and overcrowded teeth. It can be hard to brush and floss your teeth and this can lead to teeth decay and more.

Effects

As an orthodontist, you will be putting patients in braces or retainers and for the most part, braces are going to be made from metal. Thanks to modern day technology, braces are now made to be clear so they are not as visible as metal ones. There are even braces that are worn on the back of the teeth to help straighten teeth. Invisalign is now becoming a popular option and for the most part, patients will be in their braces for a year and a half to 2 years.

Considerations

There are many people who wish to work in this field, and there is an extensive amount of educational requirements that have to be met. You need to have a Bachelor's degree and then dental school is required. This equals to about 8 years of school to become a dentist. You also need to have a license in the state you wish to practice in and many orthodontists work in solo offices.

You need to have quick skills and have a good memory. You are going to be responsible and in charge of correcting misaligned teeth. You need to have good judgment as well as having a desire to work with people and helping them have a more confident smile.
