Can't Concentrate? Meditation Works!

by Robert Landau

It's one of the most common issues people have today. Staying focused...concentrating without wandering. So many folks will tell you to be 'right here, right now, in the present moment'. But do you know what this means and how to do that? Self-help teachers by the dozens are so right when they say that unless you are living in what is known as the present moment, you just aren't...present! So what happens if you aren't fully in the present? You most likely are either spending more time than necessary in your past, or thinking way too much about your future. It is said that if we know how to stay grounded in the present, then we are free of blocks and patterns that we tend to hold near to us. If you are entertaining thoughts of the past or the future, then you aren't living in the here and now.

So what prevents us from totally being in the present? Chatter! Your mind's chatter that features thoughts that have nothing to do with the present moment. It's not that mind chatter should be totally eliminated from our psyche. This type of thought interference is something that's a part of us, like it or not. What we can do is learn to temper and control mind-chatter so that it doesn't become a distraction to the point where it takes us to places that we really don't need to be. Mind-chatter is like an infant that constantly needs attention and should be lovingly put in its place so that it can learn manners and protocol. Proper boundaries need to be created and enforced.

Do you have an unruly child within you that begs you for attention? Let's see if you do. Repeat the following words...

"I fear nothing. I am walking forward with a deep knowing that I am already the success I so long to be!" Now say that statement five to six times.

Good! Did anything come up for you while you were saying those words? Any opposing thoughts or feelings pop in? If you heard the unruly child within you say anything that might counteract the words that you just read, that is known as mind-chatter. When this comes up for you and takes you out of the present moment, there's a very simple way to deal with it. All you have to do is acknowledge that it happened, then let it go and move right back into the present moment at hand.

Here's an example; So I am now saying, "I fear nothing. I am walking forward with a deep knowing that I am already the success I so long to be!" But just a couple of seconds into it I hear, "Yea but what if I don't get that job promotion and won't be able to make the mortgage payment in a couple of months? I think it's going to rain tomorrow which will really put a damper on things!"...so on and so forth.

That's a perfect example of the fear of the future that also might be tied to past events, taking you out of the present moment. As long as you buy into the belief and fear of scarcity, then that's what you'll see all around you. What you buy into and believe becomes your reality. Thoughts are things. Fear has power if you give it power. Fear stands for;

F uture

E vents

A ppearing

R eal

This means to say that the future isn't here yet. It's just appearing to be something that it might not be because it hasn't happened. You have a say in how your "future" will unfold. None of that should have anything to do with mind-chatter of a negative or fearful nature. When chatter interference comes up, ask yourself if this is really you. It isn't. It's fear or some other emotion. It's a possible that doesn't have to be a probable. It's all up to you to stop it dead in its tracks. The power is in your hands.

So how does one work with this? When I catch myself thinking and feeling stuff of a negative, counterproductive nature, I acknowledge that it happened and move on. Nothing more, but nothing less. Mind-chatter can be seen as negative thought bubbles that come up every so often. Is a bubble a permanent thing? No! Is the present a permanent thing? Yes! So this begs the question...Where do YOU want to spend your time?

Meditation is one of the best ways of working with any and all mind-chatter issues. The process of meditation helps you deal with what seems to be a distraction and helps you to not get attached to an energy which begs to be recognized. With a mediation practice in full swing taking as little as four minutes of your time each day, mind-chatter can easily be put in its place. When mind-chatter pops up as you meditate, you just let it pass as if it's a sign on a highway as you continue on your journey.

The present moment is the only thing you have...and it's a truly wonderful thing at that. The past is gone and the future isn't here yet. The more time you spend in the fullness and joy of your present, the more you'll be able to appreciate what the present has to offer you, which happens to be wonderfully amazing, totally endless possibilities! Who could ask for anything more?
