The World's Weirdest Energy Drinks
These days, it seems as if the energy drink market has run out of ideas. The industry has always thought of itself as an youth product, and marketing and selling almost entirely to teens and young adults means that it is necessary to seem edgy.
Since the very beginning energy drinks like Red Bull or Jolt Cola ignored traditional broadcast media for a different approach. Jolt attempted to make the drink appear trendy by giving it to the protagonists of Hackers and Deep Impact while Red Bull gathered a large number of "cool" students who became consumer educators for the energy drink. These students would take the energy drink to parties and concerts to make it appear as if the drink itself was important.
But it is difficult for a brand to continue to keep its cool label. Energy drinks these days try to capitalize on the success of celebrities and athletes by encouraging them to imbibe the beverage in trendy locations, although associating your drink with an individual is a dangerous proposition. Lindsay Lohan, to name a particular person, is a huge fan of energy drinks and is often photographed drinking them, but given her current status as a strung-out former star in rehab such associations are not necessarily the best for market share.
But new and upcoming energy drinks have it even harder. The market is saturated and to seem trendy energy drink manufacturers are relying on the rather unusual strategy of crafting weirdly named drinks.
Take the oddly sexually named, Blue Bawls. It hardly seems as if the phenomena that the drink is named after would be a thought that would lead to sales, but given the amount of immature jokes that websites marketing the energy drink are prepared to make, at the very least it's getting some attention.
Other crazily named beverages include Zombie Blood Energy and Blood Energy Potion, both of which come in faux blood bags. Created by Harcos, the same organization that introduced us to zombie jerky, the blood drinks insist that they have extra strong blood cells that can help give the user "zombie strength."
But the weirdest and most awkwardly named drink is distributed by Redux Beverages. Simply, the name of the drink is Cocaine. It comes in two flavors, spicy and mild, and the group also makes an energy shot. However, that's all the drink is: an edgy name.
It's entertaining to look at the current energy drink market, and try to figure out where it's going to go. Although given that we've already reached the level of Bawls and Cocaine, I don't think the future is very bright.
