Boat Insurance - Removing The Stress

by Tony Lord

Boating is a sport or a pastime that all we sailors enjoy. So I'm sure that, like me, you don't find it fun spending your time messing with the legal complexity of boat insurance when you would rather be out on the water or planning your next trip or passage.

Nevertheless, a different perspective quickly crops up for those thousands of people who are involved in boating accidents every year. Although most states in the U.S do not require the insurance of a boat, you will find that marine insurance is often required when your boat is docked or has a lien. But this is not surprising as insurance protects not only you but others around you, whether members of your crew or outsiders nearby, as well as the fabric of your boat and anything else that could be damaged in an incident.

You can immediately see that it just makes sense to protect your boat physically, as a good seaman does, and financially. Having your boat properly insured, therefore, makes good sense - regardless of local rules, regulations or laws. You know that boating involves a variety of skills and challenges - that's why we all love it. But sometimes things happen quickly or unexpectedly and that is where having the right boat insurance comes into force.

When one or more parties are involved in an accident on the water, the results - if not outright tragic -can be time consuming and expensive. As a marine boat insurance policy holder you will know that, in the event of a claim, there are experienced people who can assist in sorting out the financial side of the claim so making your life much easier than it would have been. You use your boating skills so that you should never need to make that claim call; but if you do then you will know, because of the effort you put into selecting the policy, that you will get the help you need.

If everyone involved in a boating incident has good insurance then it is much easier to resolve as the companies are used to sorting things out between themselves. The result is a reduced time to get repairs underway and the costs to you of the incident are dramatically reduced.

You may think that smaller boats, like dinghies, jet skis and canoes do not need insurance. Wrong. Even for the most careful and seasoned sailor accidents can happen. Winds and water flows are unpredictable at times, bits break, people lose their footing or grip and the unexpected happens. So you can see that getting small boat insurance is as wise as insuring a bigger boat.. Additionally, insurance is always mandatory for racing dinghies.

The danger is not over after you have packed up your boat and headed home - even in a dock accidents can occur caused by others - but you may be left to pick up the pieces.

Don't leave it too late - it is game over once the accident has happened. Do the wise thing, and make sure your insurance cover gives you the peace of mind that you need.

To Your Boating Enjoyment!
