Celtic Cremation Urns: History and Significance

by Lenette Hall

The Celtic Knot is one of the best known motifs in Celtic jewelry and art. The delicate twists and turns are found in ancient stone art and tattoos, illuminated manuscripts, in fact, just about anywhere the Celtic people have traveled. Similar designs exist in Norse culture, and as far as China.Celtic knots were being created in pre-Christian times. In addition, these knots are most known for their use in the decoration of early Christian monuments and manuscripts like the 8th century Book of Kells. Despite the early fascination with the Celtic design, the popularity has continued to grow. The meanings of Celtic designs are far reaching. It was once believed that the continual looping of the Celtic designs suggests themes of eternity and interconnectedness, and knots may have been made at one time to foil evil spirits. Interwoven figures of people and animals may have represented the interdependent nature of life. Birds seem to be heavily featured, and two or more knots laced together symbolize lovers, hunters and their prey, God and man, etc. Additionally, some knots were used as magical talismans for protection. While many of the ancient Celtic Knot designs certainly had some spiritually significant meaning, these have been lost to the ages.Despite the loss of spiritual significance, many appreciate the history and significance that the Celtic designs hold. The ring on a Celtic cross is a symbol of Irish Christianity and stands for the sun and eternity. This design brings true meaning to the word “eternity” and allows individuals to have their memory span across time! With the history of Celtic artwork stretching back as far as 400BC, Celtic designs were found in stone throughout Europe, in particular Ireland. The significance that the Irish have placed on Celtic cross and knot designs has carried over into the selection of cremation urns. Celtic designs can date back thousands of years with that design holding special meaning for the Celts. However, because there are such varied meanings, the Celtic design and urn is much more about the special personal meaning than the design holds.Although the history and significance of Celtic cross and knot designs have changed over the years, the popularity and personal significance that Celtic cross urns hold is continuing to grow. This specialized urn allows family members to provide their loved ones with a safe heaven for their ashes to be stored. Memorializing a loved one with an urn with such historical ties is a perfect way to show the true significance of that person’s life on earth. There are many ways to honor a loved one, Celtic cremation urns provide people a way to encapsulate the memory of a loved one for eternity.
