What You Need in Your Office: From Email Fax to a Smartphone

by Mark Etinger

These days, everyone's all up on the latest technology. They've got hundreds of Twitter followers, they have apps on their smartphone and all kinds of cool goings-on that they think distinguish themselves from the hoi polloi. Well, maybe they're right.

To be really efficient when it comes to work, you need access. You need to be able to do things without limitations. You need all of the best technology at your disposal and it starts with the internet.

In the old days, it would take a number of different applications to achieve the same one today. Take faxing, for example. You need a document so you fax it. This is supposed to be better than sending it by snail mail, which it is. And it's safer. But the sound alone of the modem or whatever they used to get that dial tone - it's so '90s. And hello, that was like twenty years ago. These days you can just email fax something. Email fax was what they wanted, but what they didn't understand how to achieve yet. Today it exists. And that's a beautiful thing, living in the future.

Okay so after an online fax service you need access to the internet, like all the time. Whether you want a laptop, a tablet, or smartphone - whatever. But if I were you, I'd choose the smartphone. Because how many times have you been out with a friend and wanting to remember the name of that restaurant or where it is, and you can't or don't and so you wind up settling on some way inferior place that made you wish you had just eaten at home. That feeling will soon be as archaic as being unable to spontaneously coordinate with someone what time and where you're going to meet them. Sorry that wasn't very clear. Like, if you're late for a date, you can just text them, hey I'm gonna be late, whereas twenty years ago, you'd hope they weren't mad at you and didn't leave already.

Okay let's see what else. Well if you have a computer and a smartphone and an internet fax service, you should also have a copier/printer. One that accords with your needs, so that if you need 10,000 copies you have the granddaddy copier that can handle it. And that's about it.

Oh yeah, you should probably start Tweeting, since that's what all the kids are doing and you don't want to fall behind the curve. Other than that, maybe like a red stapler. And your office will be a success.
