Videoconferencing The Underrated Technology

by Brad hingerson

It is easy to take innovations such as videoconferencing for granted. After all, we live in a technological age where little or nothing surprises us anymore. On the contrary, we expect these amazing gadgets and become piqued if they do not satisfy us. Yet videoconferencing is a triumph of technology and ensures that organizations can expand worldwide, safe in the knowledge that communication with any branch is just moments away.

Videoconferencing specifically refers to the process of video telephoning large groups of people as opposed to speaking to a single individual. It is believed that some form of videoconferencing existed as early as the 1940s and it was even used by NASA in the 1960s. Yet it was an extraordinarily expensive means of communication with computers costing $100,000 required for it to work in the 1980s.

Thanks to astonishing advancements, videoconferencing in the modern era can be performed by anyone with an internet connection with services such as Skype available absolutely free. By 2006, high definition resolution for videoconferencing was standard.

In general, videoconferencing is achieved by using specific systems which have everything necessary to facilitate communication in a single piece of equipment. This will often take the form of a video camera which is remote controlled and is attached to a console. You can alter the position of the camera with the remote control and see every corner of a conference room. The largest equipment is too large to be carried from place to place and normally resides in a specific conference room. Smaller meeting rooms are usually covered by portable equipment with individual conferences taking place on laptops.

The obvious benefit of videoconferencing is the ability to contact members of your organization from anywhere in the world. You can also host or attend important meetings relating to your industry, even if the main speaker is thousands of miles away. Having the ability to talk to anyone, anywhere at any time also saves a fortune on travel and accommodation expenses. In years gone by, companies were forced to attend conferences via planes or public transport and perhaps stay the night or weekend. No matter how much your videoconferencing equipment costs, you are likely to recoup the price in double quick time.
