Martial Arts for reality or sport

by Matthew Davidson

Many forms of martial arts have evolved into the sport form of their roots in combat. This comes about for many reasons but one of the main ones being that humans love to compete. In times of peace many feel the need to train these warring arts and form games of sorts out of the techniques they teach. Some have even made it as far as being accepted into the Olympic games, which incidentally was formed to settle disputes without war at its beginnings. Some of these sports resemble the fighting arts from which the derive and others bare vary small similarities.

Judo is one of those dynamic arts that was established as a plea for realism in training only to then in its short history turn to a game and sport oriented system. Jigoro Kano founded the system as a response to the prevailing jujitsu systems and their practices of the early twentieth century. In an effort to develop a system to keep track of the skill level of his students, he developed the first belt rank system. The ranking system plus the competitive nature of humanity quickly evolved the style able to be practiced at full speed into a popular sport. Today its Olympic competitions are watched the world over.

Numerous styles practice predefined routines that were originally designed to pass techniques from one person to another in times before other recording methods. Today these training methods are still religiously employed by traditional martial artists. Even in tournament competition settings there are individual and group floor routine categories. These have become more of a martial dance. In many instances the practitioner doesn't know what practical application many of the movements were intended to represent.

Children and adults alike can be aided by the concentration developed by practicing many forms of the fighting arts. It is a quality that must be utilized in order to defend oneself and master many of the movements. For children it helps with education and with adults their quality of work can only be improved. Many techniques develop this through precision and timing. Others nurture concentration by placing the person in a high stress situation and requiring exact reactions.

One sad fact is the reality that most parents do not know how to truly discipline their children. This is a bad state for the child while he is young but more of a problem once the child grows into adulthood. Those who have not been taught to control their impulses are then released on society. Many of these adults will justify their behavior by labeling it as a "bad temper". The martial arts can teach these people to control their emotions and help them to stop hiding behind excuses like "bad tempers".

The rise of Mixed Martial Arts has developed a group that strongly opposes their competitions. Opponents claim that if we are not to have Roosters fighting in ‘Cock Fights', why then is it alright for humans to engage in such activity. Supporters of these competitions feel that it is the next logical evolution of the martial arts which were designed for just such activities. No matter where someone settles on this issue there can be no denying that the martial arts world has been changed tremendously. There are good and bad effects from everything, and MMA is definitely no exception.
