Recording From Decks(Turntables) to PC

This tutorial is aimed at the DJ who wants to learn how to connect their Decks, also known as Turntables, to their computer or laptop. This may be wanted to learn in order for Burning CD's which may lead to mixes being handed out, or even just to have stored in their computer in an MP3/WAV format to enter online to display their skills. First you need to buy a 3.5mm Jack to 2 x RCA Cable, these can be bought very cheaply from sites such as eBay or from recognised online Dj Equipment sellers, I personally also recommend getting gold tipped cables if possible as you may need as much quality as you can, which you will soon find out. Audio Cable Once you have the lead you need to plug the 3.5mm black connector into the "Line In" socket on your computer/laptop or you can use the microphone socket. However, using the microphone socket can produce lower quality recordings, especially if the likes of your mixer are low quality, then the quality coming from your Turntables can seem to reduce very rapidly from what you get in your recording. This is the case as not all systems have the "Line In" socket. Then you need to plug the 2 RCA connectors into the "Output - Rec" on the back of your mixer, this may have a different name on your mixer, for example on certain Behringer mixers it may be called "Tape Out", as long as it is an output socket then you should be fine. When you have conected the lead you are ready to get a program, There are many programmes out there, but personally I recommend Audacity which can be found here, This is a very easy-to-use program, all you need to do is install the program and hit the record button, and away you go. (You may need to adjust your Line In volume which can be done in the Sounds section in your Control Panel) Once you have the cables and the program, your ready to go. You can then start listening back on yourself which can be a good learning tool, create a cd to send out or even just pass it on to your friends.
