Content Writing Jobs: 5 Quick Tips For Getting And Keeping More Clients

by Adam Bauthues

You're a freelancer and you live and breathe via your various content writing jobs. These jobs are acquired by many different people whom you affectionately know as your clients. That makes getting and keeping more clients paramount to your success. Here are five quick tips for getting and keeping more clients for your content writing jobs.

1) Always Ask For Referrals.

This can feel uncomfortable at first, but get in the habit of doing it. There is certainly nothing wrong with doing this in any way. In fact, customers are often happy to refer you to others, they just need to be reminded to do so. Super Hint: If you can create a referral program where your current clients receive a discount or credit for your services if they bring you more content writing jobs via new clients, then you have created a win-win situation and that is what good business is all about.

2) Build Professional Relationships

Be a consummate professional. If you're an excellent person to work with, you'll keep your clients - even if your rates are a bit higher or your timeline a little bit longer than other freelancers. The truth is, we place a high value on our business relationships, because if they are built right, both you and your clients propser. Also, if you can build a strong relationship with your clients, you'll keep them for the long haul. They will in turn feel compelled to brag about you and talk about you to their business friends. I don't need to tell you that positive word of mouth advertising is the greatest marketing tool.

3) Communicate Regularly With Your Clients

You don't have to have an opt-in list and an email marketing campaign, but if you regularly connect with your clients, you stay in the front of their mind when they have a need or when someone asks them if they know of any good content writers. There are two approaches to regular client communication and you can combine the two approaches as you see fit. They are:

- Send Monthly Promotions: Send your client list an email once a month, or more often if you like, highlighting a promotion. For example, "10% off any orders of $100 or more for the month of January." You can run specials of all different kinds for varios holidays too. You have the option to get really creative here!

- Send Short Notes: Send your client a quick note when you're thinking of them. For example, "I saw this article in the Wall Street Journal and thought of you." This helps build a relationship to them and it's a great way to stay connected. I know this is easier for someone who has only a few clients as opposed to someone who has many, but if you take the time to at least send this to your best clients you will make a business friend for life. Christmas cards and birthday cards work well too if you keep that data on hand. Hint: Facebook is a great tool for this as it helps you keep track of all these important dates!

4) Make Yourself Known

Get out there and make yourself known. Build your brand. Tell your clients who you are. Participate in social networking, blog and be a guest blogger. The possibilities are endless here. Basically do what you can to generate awareness about you and your services. One new content writing job can turn into thousands of dollars over the course of a year and they can refer other clients to you which can result in even more content writing jobs for the year.

5) Be Helpful

Be willing to help and inform others in your community even when there isn't any apparent reward. Whether you believe in the law of attraction or not, when you give to others, they give back. This doesn't mean you give away your services; what it means is that you're willing to help others by providing insight, information and a listening ear when they need it without expecting anything in return.

If your client is trying to resolve an issue and you can help them with your experience, offer them help without charge. You don't always have to charge them a consultation fee when they just need some quick advice. They'll appreciate it and you never know when they'll be able to return the favor.

All of this really boils down to one thing: Building Relationships. Much of the art of keeping clients and getting accepted to work on new content writing jobs is solely based on this relationship building ability. It is also very much connected with getting new clients. Word of mouth from satisfied clients is a wonderful way to fill your schedule with many more ideal clients and projects. Get out there and connect with others!
