Why Currency Cards Are The Best Solution For Travelers Wanting To Buy Thai Baht

by Tom Fisher

If you're planning to travel from Britain to Thailand or in fact any other country, you will need to ensure that you have sufficient foreign currency for your visit. To buy Thai Baht is often problematic in the UK. Not all exchange offices have this currency in stock, and you might have to face long queues in one of the larger branches.

If you go to your bank or an exchange office, they will have a specific Thai Baht exchange rate. This will very often not be the most favourable rate of exchange on the market. On top of that, they will very often charge you a substantial transaction fee. If you're not exchanging a large amount, this can form a sizeable percentage of the amount you exchange.

Fortunately one can go about this differently. If you rather get a currency card before you leave, you won't just get a better exchange rate, you also won't have to pay the transaction fee of a normal exchange transaction. Just explain to the assistant how much you need in Baht and she will calculate the exact amount in British Pounds you have to pay in. The card will then be loaded with the applicable amount in Thai Baht.

This means you will not end up the victim of sudden changes in the exchange rate either. The amount of Thai Baht is calculated the day when you deposit the money on the card, and that's the exact amount you will have available once in Thailand. With a debit/credit card, the amount of Baht you get is only calculated at the time of withdrawal. This could sometimes benefit you, but more often than not it will work the other way round.

Your currency card can be used at most ATMs in over 160 countries. You won't have to stand in line to exchange money every few days or become the victim of a con artist if you exchange money on the street. You also get currency cards which you can use to in shops, hotels and restaurants like any credit card.

As far as security is concerned, a currency card is also much better than a credit or debit card. The currency card is not linked to your personal bank account. That means that, if it should get stolen, there's no way for the thief to get access to funds that are not on the card. As long as you keep your PIN safe, your risk is minimal.

When you want to buy Thai Baht again in future, keep a currency card in mind therefore. Not only are they much more convenient than other options, but also more secure. You will pay no transactions fees and also qualify for a better exchange rate.
