Products, appliances, technological innovations, tools, can make our lives infinitely more livable. Just a hundred years ago everything you do in a week would probably take you a year or more, if these things were possible at all. You couldn't wash clothes or dishes with any sort of ease. Chores took up most of people's lives prior to the Industrial Revolution. These days we are incredibly lucky. Indoor plumbing was our first big victory over unnecessary chores and we did not stop there. The refrigerator, the dishwasher, the clothes washer and dryer, all came along significantly cutting our weekly humping and scrubbing forever. Well maybe forever.
When an appliance breaks down, we can find ourselves completely shuttered back into the grip of colonial angst. We have very little capacity for things going wrong these days. Possessions though, will always break down. It is the monkey on the back of our very advanced modern society. Lucky for us when the washer breaks down we can just pound the keys on our cellular telephones until we stumble onto a Whirlpool appliance repair man or woman. As people, we rely on technology and devices that are out of our control more and more often. This ensures that appliance repair will never stop. In fact it seems to suggest that it will only get greater and greater.
When the Maytag dryer repair person or the Frigidaire repair person stops by to fix the device which we simply could not live without we are so released. It is not that we actually could not live without the thing, it is simply that we lack the fortitude to try and live without it. I am not judging. They can help us live better but they should not be the center of our lives. In fact they are there so that we can spend more time with what is more important.
