What To Feed Birds In Winter
When winter comes around, it becomes increasingly difficult for birds to keep their eating patterns regular. Many garden birds who do not migrate to warmer climates can struggle to find regular food, should the temperature drop too low. This means that humans are the best source of getting food for birds, as we are much more adapted to keeping ourselves fed over Christmas and the winter period. Because of this, we can then find it that much simpler to feed the garden birds that would struggle without our help.
Plain peanuts are the most common food to feed birds, and they are great for any time of the year. Many people will put these out in hanging feeders. Peanuts attract most every kind of bird, including titmice, nuthatches, chickadees and more. Peanuts do not freeze, and are not often affected by warmer weather; this makes them perfect for the entire year. They are a high calorie and high fat nut, which will be the perfect source of food for the more common and most exquisite types of garden bird.
Black sunflower seeds are much like the striped ones in terms of availability, and the way they look. The shells of these are slightly thinner than other sunflower seed types. However, they are also a lot richer in oil content, which is what makes them so fantastic to give to birds. They will attract a very large range of birds, and you can provide the local garden birds with the seeds on a platform, in a tube, or in a hopper feeder.
Suet is also an incredibly attractive food source for lots of birds to dine on. Using these in the summer can be incredibly tricky, as they will be likely to melt in the hotter weather. However, within the winter months these high calorie and fatty cakes can be just what many birds need. Putting these out just before the migration period, if the weather is cool enough, can give migrating birds the bulk up that they need before setting off on their perilous journeys. You can also of course make suet balls, and cakes, in your own home, with a special mix of suet and bird seed.
Winter is a time when birds need to rely on the food that people leave out. The problem here is that they can usually never find it because people stop leaving out food when it gets cold. The birds that do not migrate need this food and so a bird feeder should always be full.
