Best Man Speeches 101: How to Deliver Best Man Speeches?

by Emmitt Streat

The downside of being a best man is that you have to make and deliver the best man speech. Say you were already able to make the best man toast on your own, after a grueling “get-together” that you had with your memories (getting vaguer and vaguer by the moment), a pen and a piece of paper. You may think that the worst is over, but the real battle in best man speeches is when you deliver them.

Here are some quick tips and pointers in delivering best man speeches.

• Best man speeches are made to be heard. So make sure that your voice is loud enough to be heard by the person sitting on the back most part of the ball room (or wherever you will be saying your toast). Usually a microphone will save the day for you but if there is no microphone on the venue, just talk a bit louder than usual.

• Maintain eye contact to the audience. You can make this natural by keeping on your mind that this is a toast, not a school declamation contest. Talk to the audience as if you are just talking to a circle of friends.

• If you brought cards with your toast outlines on them, just browse through them once in a while. Do not keep your eyes glued on them as if you are just reading the newspaper aloud.

• Pause when the audience is laughing at your jokes or stop for a few seconds to accommodate them saying “aww.” Just think of the way people in sitcoms talk in front of a live audience. They allow the laughter to die first before delivering another line.
