Poor People Like Rich People Things Too

by Mark Etinger

I am not rich, very much the opposite in fact. Between student loan payments, bills, and keeping up functional alcoholism I'm lucky if I can spring for a hot dog for lunch some days. In spite of that, or maybe because of it, I desperately love reading about rich people things. My favorite past time is finding out about all of the luxury items that I can not indulge in. I look at luxury watches and amazing sports cars, the latest electronic gadgets and the strangest cosmetic surgical procedures. My perpetual misery is a direct result of my lack of money and some people have told me my obsession with the wealthy and with big money items is simply a version sadistic self torture. These people are probably right but my inability to pay bills and enjoy life is the canker sore I simply can not help but press my filthy tongue against.

I wonder sometimes if the incredibly wealthy know anything about ATM transaction fees or how difficult and desperate things can feel when you overdraw from a bank account or how heart breaking it can be to pawn a wedding ring for groceries. I wonder this because I am so well versed in the world of private jets and Hublot watches that cost thousands of dollars. I even have in depth understanding of what might make a bottle of scotch, usually reserved in my life for silencing the demons in my head telling me of what a hopeless failure I am, cost upwards of seventy thousand dollars. I know which million dollar pieces of property are worth buying and which you might buy simply to flaunt your wealth. Yes I get these rich people things because I want them and so I research them heavily and then mope about my inability to experience them for myself.

They say money can not buy happiness and they may be right, I wouldn't know, but it would be great stop feeling anxious every time a bill collector shows up at my door. They scold me in front of my children for my lack of "responsibility" but really they miss the point, I am very responsible I just have no money.

Alas these intrusions on my life will likely never end. I am doomed to be poor forever because I am not the sort of person that understands how money works. Oh, I know what you can buy with money, unlimited lobster for example, but I do not know how to get money. This is the way the system is designed of course. I am a permanent poor person.
