Music lyrics-the language of the gods

by Thomas H. Lindblom

Lyrics of popular songs encompass a widespread number of tastes and preferences. Culture plays a major part when it comes to individual taste. Types of melody, and the pace of a song, not to mention the type of instruments used, play a major role in the music lyrics of any composition.

Many popular songs have a subliminal effect on the human brain. We have all heard a tune being played and then end up repeating singing bits of it for the rest of the day. With music accessibility being so easy, whether you are jogging on the road or hitting the cross trainer, the amount of music we listen to has increased over the years. Storage of all your favourite sounds, with the introduction of mp3 players, either in solid format or integrated into the latest mobile phone, has never been easier. The bygone days of carrying plastic 45s and a bulky record player around to your friend’s house are risible memories.

Many of us reminisce, usually with a glass in one hand, on the old favourite super lyrics of our younger years. For those who can only remember how that long-forgotten favourite tune went, by humming or singing a few bars, can now go online and locate the title-just by using the microphone!

So what is it that makes song lyrics so popular? Songs don’t just make us feel happy and motivated, they can also make us sad. Could be that it is one of the most direct forms of expression? Whether it’s a mournful hymn, a tune that makes you homesick, or an exciting blast from the past, we are all hooked on music of some kind.

The power and influence of song lyrics can be clearly demonstrated by the big advertising companies. Those interval advertisements on the tv would not have the same impact without that accompanying tune. Many products have experienced record sales on the back of those catchy tunes and lyrics. Therefore, you have to agree that music is one of the most popular pastimes-I just think I’ll leave the karaoke to others to keep it that way!

Tim Heffernan gets so much inspiration from downloading and buying song lyrics, it is a big part of his gym training regime to play new songs each time.
