Should I Hire a Landscape Design Professional?
Aside from whether or not a professional does your landscaping, homeowners do it for several reasons, most commonly for aesthetics and curb appeal. When you come home from work you can look onto your property and smile as the flowers shine in the sun, the bushes are trimmed and complement the path to the front door, and the garden boasts a rich diversity of plant life. There is something that makes people feel good when they see a tasteful assortment of shrubs and flowers aligned with the shape of their property, as if to say "This is a great spot to grow and thrive, humans and plants alike." And those who have aspired to include hardscaping into the design add yet another level of eye candy to boost their mood when returning to their scenic home from work or running errands. To tell you the truth, even though the first glance at a property does seem superficial, I'll bet in many cases a well-maintained garden and property is a pretty accurate indicator of happiness.
Some are lucky enough to possess a "green thumb" when it comes to landscape design, to have an eye for putting the right things in the right places and drawing lines where they look best. There is a lot of work involved in designing a beautiful landscape that matches the style of your home and personality. You have to take into account things like how much water different areas receive, sunlight versus shade, grading or slope that affects drainage, wind direction, and sprinkler systems. You have to consider these factors when choosing the plant life as well as the architectural design, and consider how much maintenance you want to put up with after the design is implemented. My mother's garden in the front of her house is relatively bare in the winter except for a few shrubs, but by mid-summer almost the entire front porch is hidden by flowers, shrubs, and bushes, which she must take great effort to trim and maintain, and hack away in the fall. Other people grow cacti and use stones instead of mulch.
Fortunately you don't have to be a landscape design expert to get great landscape design on your property. There are plenty of landscape design professionals out there who will meet with clients and go over their needs. They will work with your preferences, the layout of your property, your budget, taste in plants/flowers/shrubs, etc. Hiring a professional is the way to go if you don't know what you're doing, if you don't have time to design and build a landscape and/or hardscape, or if you want to go from pretty good to amazing, with cars slowing down as they pass your house to stare.
Whether you hire the pros for a budget you choose or want to showcase some of your creative design talents, it's important to have a landscape design you can be proud of. And make your neighbors jealous.
