How to Prevent Bad Breath

But if you notice people back away from you or look to the side when you talk, it is a good bet your breath smells. The major cause of chronic bad breath is the production of a group of gases called volatile sulfur compounds that are produced on the back of the tongue by a type of germs. These anaerobes are good at digesting proteins found in the saliva and in the bacteria mass itself. The proteins contain sulfur, which is stripped off and released. These gases become stored in the saliva, mucous, and soft tissue of the mouth. As more sulfur compounds are produced, they approach saturation and can be smelled by other people.

If you are thinking of tackling a bad breath problem, you can forget about the breath sprays and breath mints. These products do not kill the bacteria that cause breath odor. They can mask the problem for a while, but will not get rid of it.

A good way to prevent bad breath is to follow a food oral hygiene program. Brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day to keep bacteria out of the mouth. Use a tongue scrape to scrape bacteria off the back of the tongue and reduce the likelihood of mouth odor.

Keeping your mouth moist can also help to prevent bad breath. A dry mouth gives bacteria the environment they need to multiply. That is what most often causes “morning breath.” To keep your mouth moist, drink plenty of water, chew sugarless gum, or suck on hard candles. There are certain times when some medications cause a dry mouth and hence bad breath. Most commonly, certain diuretics, antihistamines, and some drugs for high blood pressure, cancer, and angina have this side effect. Ask your doctor if these pills might be the cause of your bad breath.

Watching what you eat and drink can also help to prevent bad breath. The odor of some foods and drinks stay in the mouth and cause bad breath. Be aware that having a spicy or liquid lunch may cause you offend your colleagues with bad breath later in the day. Smoking is also a major culprit as a cause of bad breath. Stale smoke smell lingers in the mouth. Simply rinsing your mouth with water after a cigarette can reduce some of the odor problem.

Chewing some fresh parsley can help to remove bad breath. This old folk remedy is a healthy way to cleanse your breath. Parsley contains high levels of chlorophyll, which is the active ingredient in many breath fresheners.
