Become an Expert in Your Industry

by Scott Duffy

How to promote your business, product, and most importantly yourself through radio: Radio hosts have forever been perceived as the experts in their related fields, and on the topics which they discuss during their shows. Until now, however, there have only been a few, usually cost-prohibitive ways to become a talk radio host; especially in more than one market. Ways to have your own show: There are those who go to broadcasting school, put in their time on a local station, get recognized by their employer as deserving of greater opportunities, and are syndicated throughout the radio network’s affiliate stations. Unfortunately, there are very few people who ever achieve this, and those that do are employees of their respective networks, thus, are essentially told which sponsors to pander to for a paycheck. There are those who wish to maintain decision making power in an attempt to promote their own business interests, however, syndicating an independently produced talk radio program is an expensive, difficult, and time consuming task from which very few ever realize a return. When you consider that one would have to pay for studio time, pay for satellite time, pay a producer to run the show, and pay a syndicator to attempt to clear time on stations big enough to be heard by the Host’s desired demographic while competing with hundreds of other show choices for that particular time slot, you quickly realize it is a gamble at best. Brokering Time: There are those that have big enough bank rolls to simply buy time on stations, but considering that hour-blocks on traditional land based stations can range from $100 dollars upwards of $7,500, per station, per hour; you can see how cost prohibitive that could become for anybody other than those running straight infomercials—which would make it impossible for the host to be seen as an expert. An affordable means to establishing expert status: Fortunately for the many dedicated professionals wishing to create a heightened presence and actually offer sound advice, without sounding like an infomercial and maintaining “expert” status with the audience, the advent of Internet Radio has seen record growth with no signs of ever slowing down. For roughly the same cost of two or three sixty second commercials, on one AM talk radio station, in one decent size market, a host on Internet Radio can have a full hour of talk time, with spots in their commercial breaks, to build and grow audience through simultaneous worldwide distribution. The host can maintain creative freedom, have final say on who the sponsors are, and maintain the intellectual property. Most importantly, they can build identity and branding, while building trust. Other advantages of Internet Radio: It is very difficult for land based hosts and advertisers to see immediate action resulting from their advertising dollar, as it is difficult to drive and write down phone numbers at the same time. However, Internet Radio is point of presence purchase potential. Anybody listening to Internet Radio can be at the host or advertiser’s web-page with credit card in hand, able to make a buying decision or learn more about the products or services offered as the show is running. In addition, your shows are archived and available for distribution via podcasting, play/download on your website and syndication. VoiceAmerica.com: There are a couple different Internet Talk Radio companies in the world, however, the Voice America Network (www.voiceamerica.com) is the only one that offers both a huge, established listening audience, as well as the patent pending technology for the most incredible online viral marketing campaign ever invented. They also provide full production, marketing, and host training for the right individuals, with the right show ideas.
