How To Fire Up Your Motivation To Finish Your Novel

by Winston Takeda

If you've ever thought about writing a novel, you aren't alone. Many people feel they've got some kind of story in them that the world must know. Just walking into a book store gives them a feeling of motivation, and they can easily imagine their name up there on the best seller list. But anybody who has started writing a novel knows how difficult it can be. Even if you have a well thought out idea for a story, it can be tough to transform those thoughts into ideas that people will be willing to pay good money for.

If you've ever sat down and tried to write even a short story, you know how difficult it can be. You need to have a superhuman amount of motivation in order to keep plugging away, day after day. In this article, you are going to learn some powerful mental tricks to keep you going.

The first thing you'll need is to imagine what it will be like when you are finished. What will you see, feel, and hear? Imagine speaking to an agent on the telephone, and hearing him or her saying what a great book you've written, and that they are sure it's going to be a best seller. Really imagine it in as much detail as possible. Even feel the phone up against your ear while you are talking to them.

Whenever you feel low on motivation, simply play this movie in your head few times. Take some time, take a deep breath, and close your eyes. Imagine it as vividly as you can. Doing this five or ten minutes per day should give you enough motivation to keep going.

Another way to keep your motivation high is to write a fake check out to yourself from ACME publishing company. Make it out for an amount that you think is realistic for your first novel. Use some kind of financial software, or print out a realistic check from the Internet, so it looks real. Fill it out, and put it up on your wall just above your computer. So when you feel lacking in motivation, all you've got to do is look up at your check.

Another way to keep you motivated is to give yourself rewards for milestones. Every time you finish a chapter, eat a big bowl of chocolate ice cream, or something like that. When you finish your manuscript, go have a nice dinner somewhere with your family.

You'll find these are some useful ways to keep you motivated. Just keep on writing, and never give up. You'll be famous before you know it.
