Dr. Douglas J. Channell is a suburban Superman who does it all, and says you can too! He's a husband and a father who always seems to accomplish his goals, by focusing on what's important and what's in front of himself at the time. "It's the opposite of multi-tasking," he says. "It's compartmentalization."

"You don't do more things at once," says Dr. Channell. "You do one thing at a time, and you do it well." The compartmentalization of his own life serves as an example of what can be achieved by anyone.

He's a family man who spends most evenings at home with his wife and son. They eat dinner together, talk about their day, play games, finish homework and prepare for bedtime. "The bedtime rituals can be rewarding and perplexing at the same time," he says. "Here's where routine has it's rewards."

He's a dad; his favorite pasttimes include pushing his son on the swing in the backyard, jumping on the trampoline with his son and other kids from the neighborhood, and tossing a football around with his son while avoiding the constant rush of their Jack Russell Terrier.

He's a son, whose mother and father live an hour up the road and constantly fill his mind. He still feels the sting of losing his grandmother. He describes her as a rock throughout his early years and still leans on his memory of her as a source of strength. He has a younger brother and two sisters with whom he remains close and in constant touch.

He's a survivor of testicular cancer, the experience of which encouraged him to prioritize more effectively. "If you lose your health, you really can't help anyone," he says. "You have to make time to exercise and relax. Set your boundaries and say no to those things that steal your time, and say yes to those things that add to your life."

He's a teacher and a life skills coach to his eighth grade math students. He teaches at his alma mater, kids that sit in the same seat he once occupied himself, kids with the same self doubts, worries and dreams. "The largest part of teaching young students, is teaching them how to be effective learners," he says. "When they realize their own possibilities and potential, their natural motivation to learn will not be stopped."

He's a life-long learner. He earned a Master's Degree at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education and then a doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of Alabama. He strives to broaden his teaching skills, teaching various subjects and grade levels across the curriculum.

He's a writer whose won awards for both short stories and screenplays. He's written a novel, not yet published, for middle grade readers that focuses on the plight of the African Elephant. It's about three best friends from rural Texas, who spend a summer at the Amboseli Wildlife Preserve in Kenya. They become intimately involved in elephant research and learning about the conservation problems that ultimately affect everyone on the planet.
