Caffine,How to make your own from Tea or Coffee.
Basic chemistry in simple terms
If you like using Caffine as a pick me up or maybe as a stimulant or even as something to word off colds and other common elments, then maybe you would like to know how to easly make your own at home.
All drugs and chemicals can be named or put into catagories that pertain not just to the drug itself but also things like a different procedure or technics that are use with it, or maybe just to describe something about it. "In other words", which will be the fundamenlals used with descrbing most proceedures in this proceedure, The extraction route that Im about to pass on to you could likely be described in a million different ways, but Im just laying down the straight facts, and am not trying to impress anyone with a bunch of techical words or fancy theorys.
Caffine is an oily subtance when its in the form found floating around inside your morning coffee cups. And the big thing with alot of organic oils are that thay normally have an easy tendecee to change in Ph.
Ph is a scale used to describe a substances acidity level, and normally most water soulabile human consumable substances are at the Ph of around 7.0 Or give or take a littlein either direction. A good rule of thumb is that if it dosent have much of a bitter taste then its probally a substance thats close to our bodys Ph levels which are around 7.8 or so.
Alright , without really boreing you too much with all the science tech stuff ill move right on along and tell you what im talking about in extracting the caffine from your favorite beverage. Tea, is prepaired in water and it has a Ph of 7.0 As you boil the tea the oilly caffine leaches out and sort of just floats around on the top. Now if you were to add at a 3 to 1 raito some solvent like either or kerosene,to your boiled tea, in a glass you would easly see a glass consisting of two parts because water and solvents usually wont mix right!
Alright, your water will be the liquid on the bottom because its heaver than either and the caffine will also be down there with it, But since the caffine is an oil with a changablke Ph. If we add some alkilene substance, say like lye, ammoniona or baking soda ( sodium hydroxide) then we can change the Ph of the caffine and by doing so force it up and into the solvent simply because it can stay in the water with a very high or very low Ph.
Once youve moved the caffine out of the water/tea mixture you will then need to discard it by pouring off the solvent and throwing away the old tea that now has lye in it. Play close attention to the solvent that you saving to make sure that it is completelt free from all even small drops of water /tea. Because even a small amount will comntaminate your pull.
Now that you have the caffine pulled up into your solvent your next trick will be getting out of that and on to the pure product that your after. Which isnt that hard at all but is often tricky because this next sept is very sensitive and must be done with your best persision possible. O.K< Now add your 1 3rd part back to the solvent and this time use pure water. Distilled is prefered but tap will work as long as it dosent have too many hard mineralls in it. Once youve added the water your going to need some acid/alkline typed Ph strips or have a good eye for clarity will often help. But take it from me and that good eye im talking about sometimes takes years for a good chemist to develope, so get the Ph strips for this one. Shake the mixture well ,inside a cleaned out soda bottle/cap and then turn off the cap and place 1 Ph strip inside the cap area of the bottle mixture and quiockly replace the cap. again,Quickly, turn the bottle upside down so that the Ph strip is in the water part of the bottle. Then turn the bottle right side up and remove the strip and take your reading. The acicd level at this point is going to be very low simply because we recently used the lye extraction for removing the caffine, right. So even though we knew that the Ph was high we tested it for seeing just how high it was so well have a good idel on how many drops of hydrochloric acid were going to need to correct our Ph.
Usually Ill add like 3 / 4 drops if its real high right off then Ill gently shake the mixture again and take another reading. The idea is to slowly bring the Ph back down to the netrule zone, but not to take it past the 7.0 area because once you passed your mark its a real chore getting it to turn around and come back. Alot of chemist have lost countless reactions like this. Once you correct the Ph your next step weill be to shake or slam the caffine hard back into the water where its now wonting to go back to and then pouring off the water and evaperating it dry to expose the puri9fide caffine product. You can fluff up the caffine substancew into a much better consumming form simply by pouring a small amout of acetone onto the slowly dried and still hot caffine and stierring or rocking the drying plate gently at this point back and forth. Now you have susessfully extracted your own caffine and after a short filtering/ drying period its ready for use and storing away in a glass bottle. Someplace cool and dark
About the Author
It could be said that every man has a passion and organic chemistry is certainly Martin (marty)Blackburns. With Having read over 100 college chemistry text and referance books it may be even more than just a passion, It could be a full blown obsession as this guy pretty much eat and dreams chemistry. Which is pretty ironic since marty has techanicaly never even stepped one foot into an actual chemistry class room or has never taking one class or talked to a professor or even a elementry teacher for that matter, Marty has simply been teaching himself chemistry and has been at it for the last 12 to 15 years. We can all learn a leasson from ole marty now. You dont ever have to fell like you were cheated out of ant situation in life just because you got picked over for a new job in an new and exciting field on anything simular. Because actually if you wont something bad enough, its our good fortune that in our world the liture is available for anyone, who cares to search for it.
