Glorifying Wine

by Mark Etinger

Drinking wine is as popular as ever, and it is even seeing a lot of fans from the early 20's crowd. Growing up, you may have seen only your parents and older folks drink wine on occasion, but the market has grown such that juniors and seniors in college have already started to drink and appreciate wine. Because of this, you can buy wine online just as easily as you can walk into a liquor store and buy a bottle of your favorite wine. But what makes wine so attractive that, not only do people drink it, they also create or become part of a wine of the month club? Let us discuss that further.

First off, there is red wine and white wine, and they each come in a number of varietals. This refers to the grape variety from which the wine was produced. Some red wine varietals include Shiraz, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. White wine examples include Chardonnay, Moscato, and Riesling. Each varietal has its own unique characteristics that are described through a series of complicated terms which include aroma, taste, acidity, body, dry, tannic and a large swath of other words. And as many as there are different types of wine, the number of people with their own specific tastes and preferences can easily dwarf that number. Some people are fans of red wine while others only drink white wines; some people may only drink Shiraz while others may only drink wine from a specific vineyard or year; and that number can go on and on.

There is something about drinking wine that gives the wine drinker a touch of class. While at the end of the day one can argue that it is just a different kind of alcoholic beverage, wine boasts more complex tastes than any of its alcoholic brethren. This is part of the reason why wine tasting and wine collecting is a hobby people like to do. Wines tend to get better with age which is an important point to keep in mind when differentiating it from other alcoholic beverages. Wine collectors know this and so choose to buy and collect old vintages and store them. On special occasions or during wine club meetings, they break out their favorite vintages and pour out a glass or two to taste and drink.

As with other things, getting into wine tasting and wine drinking is an acquired taste. But once you do get into it, you open up a world of complex and interesting tastes.
