Cool Down Your Xbox 360 With These Simple Precautions

by Marc Sandford

To get a head start on it's competitors, Microsoft accelerated the production of it's Xbox 360 product too quickly. The end result of this is that well over 30 percent of their products have suffered the red ring of death failure. This device has many 'bugs' due to poor design and manufacture.

It has a cooling system which hardly keeps pace with the heat output of it's circuitry. When it does overheat, one or more of it's many design 'bugs' come to life and eventually destroys your machine. Not allowing your Xbox to overheat is imperative for prolonging it's life.

How to go about operating your Xbox 360 at a cool temperature is the topic of this article.

Although no one will go out of their way to block the cooling vents, there are several unintended ways of doing this. These involve placing the Xbox on soft, fluffy or shaggy surfaces like beds, sofas, rugs or pillows.

Be careful to place the Xbox in an open and airy environment. What this means is that cabinets, bookcases, racks, or any confined space isn't a home for your Xbox. Often, people will do contradictory things like keeping the ventilation openings obstruction free while placing the Xbox in a cabinet. Oversights like this are very common because we naturally tend to arrange things in an effort to conserve space.

Try placing the Xbox on it's side so that it gets more exposure to the open air. You may also want to direct a small fan at your console.

Don't put the Xbox next to heat sources such as furnaces, heater vents, radiators, stoves and other heat generating electronics. In addition to these obvious heat sources, be sure not to place it near a window that gets direct sunlight.

While keeping the Xbox cool is vital, remember that the power brick also needs good ventilation. Placing the power brick on the floor is a very normal thing to do. However, soft shaggy carpets are to be avoided since they will obstruct the free flow of air. The power brick is best placed up off the floor on to a level and hard surface.

The tips discussed above are meant to be prevention measures for a new Xbox. However, it would be a good idea to try them if you've experienced the ring of death for the first time. Hopefully, your Xbox had shut down before serious damage could occur.
