The Role of English Host Families When Learning a Foreign Language Abroad

by Alex Logan

There's no doubt about it. Learning a foreign language abroad is the best way to accumulate the information and knowledge needed to become a fluent speaker of your chosen second language.

Learning the English language is the main objective of the majority of the world's language students and there is nowhere better to learn it than in the country where it originated; Great Britain. To pursue your educational experience in school, college or university, in a land where English is the mother tongue, is the dream of thousands of students all over the world. The ability to successfully and clearly communicate in the English language through speaking, reading, writing and listening is a major achievement for students of all ages who are learning a foreign language abroad.

Studying for a two, three or four year course in English at an educational establishment in the United Kingdom also means integrating within the local community. Of course, this will automatically be accomplished if you are staying on campus with fellow English language learning students, but if you are on your own, a rented room in a city or town that is not known to you could prove to be a little daunting. There is one way to overcome this and to make your experience of living and studying in England even more satisfying and worthwhile. English host families are the perfect solution if you are looking to improve your English and learn about the country you are living and studying in, and about the everyday lifestyles of the host family you select to live with. Stay for a period of time with a host family and all your English language skills will improve dramatically as you will have no other alternative but to communicate with them in English for the duration of your stay with them. This can be of enormous benefit to your language skills as you cannot use any other language to communicate with them. This is called immersion - and it's a fun and friendly way to learn the English language quicker than you ever thought possible.

For the length of your stay everything will be in English, from reading newspapers and magazines to watching television and movies. Books, lectures and traditional study methods normally used when learning English will be confined to the classroom or bedroom during your time with English host families, and in their place will come the chance to use your English skills like speaking, reading, listening and observation in real life circumstances and with a friendly English host family. Host families in England help students learn about the rich history, culture and traditions of the United Kingdom and students will be introduced to their relatives, friends and neighbours at parties, get-togethers and family outings.

The English communication skills you have already learned and your confidence will increase immensely when you stay with English host families in the United Kingdom, and the experience is of huge value to the thousands of students who choose to learn the English language abroad.
