An Out of the Box Experience

by Elmar Sandyck

I am very much inspired by a book that I am currently reading.

"Out of the Box for Life: Being Free Is Just A Choice" written by Warren Berland, PH.D. talks about how we can escape from the prison walls that we ourselves built.

In the Getting Out of the Box" chapter, the author showed several stories on how certain people overcame their boxed life. According to Berland, "any and all limiting beliefs are a sign of being in the box. Once we experience these beliefs, we are trapped in an image of ourselves that feels unworthy and unable to do anything about the situation. But in truth, we are simply looking at ourselves, as well as others, through a dark lens that colors everything we see, think, and feel. There is no way out if this difficulty unless we realize what we are doing. Once we do, we can correct our mistaken perceptions and respond more appropriately to any situation." Powerless to change.

This may be why we live a life inside the box. But in an exercise that I will be sharing with you, you will realize that being in the box is a thing of the past if you only follow these important steps:

Step 1: Recognize that you're in the box. The first sign that we are moving on is if we truly recognize that we are stuck, constricted, limited, and in pain.

Step 2: Put the issue aside. I agree with the author that it is very difficult to gain clarity and objectivity when we are in the middle of an upset. We should focus on the issue at hand by distancing ourselves from the problem. Taking a step back and see things from an outsider's perspective.

Step 3: Ask and answer questions to get out of the box.

What would i feel or experience if i was out of the box right now? How would I be feeling? What would I be doing? What would I be thinking?

Step 4: Once you are out of the box, try and look at the issue that troubled you. Can you see the difference? Simple.

Objectivity.

Because it's only when we are out of the box and looking in that we can see things as they really are.
