13 Things To Teach Your Child About Photography

by Stacy Robinson

Teaching your child to take photographs using a digital camera is not very difficult. Digital cameras are so much easier to use than the old style cameras. Using digital camera requires children to learn a few basic concepts and in no time their shooting great pictures. Here are 13 easy lessons to teach your child so he or she will be ready to take fabulous photos.

The first lesson is to experiment. They need to take shoots from different angles, using different lighting, and from a unique perspective. Don't let them get stuck in a rut early in life. This leads to the second lesson of background. Most people look at their subject without paying any attention to what is in the background. The clutter and unwanted objects in the background can ruin an otherwise wonderful photo. Holding the camera straight and still is another important lesson. Not all photographs have to be straight, but they can be at various angles, if it is done intentionally. However, the camera must be still. Camera shakes can totally ruin a photo. To avoid this, the next lesson is how to hold a camera. Holding the camera properly will keep it from being dropped or damaged as well as resolve camera shakes.

Another lesson is getting in close. Unless you're taking scenery and landscape photos, getting in close to your subject gets great detailed photos that are amazing. When you take amazing photos you should take lots of photos which is the next lesson. Taking lots of photos increases the chance of getting one perfect picture. Digital photos are very easy to store, review and weed those that are not up to par. Once of the reasons that some photos are not up to par is a lack of balance between the subject of the photo and the other objects. Teaching a child how to create this balance is an important lesson. Some children have a natural eye for balance, but most must be taught.

Learning how to determine the focal point of the photo is another lesson. The focal point, or point of interest, is so important to creating top quality photos. This also follows along with another lesson, the rule of thirds. Reviewing the photos with them and critiquing their progress and results is a helpful lesson. They can take the information and improve their photos.

One of the most common errors is allowing the automatic focus to focus on an object in the background or the foreground. Sometimes it may be wise to turn off the autofocus and focus manually. Another lesson is using the camera is to explore the different modes. Digital cameras have portrait, sports, and macro modes amount several others. Using these modes can greatly improve the photos. As you're getting a grasp on these the next lesson would be to learn about ISO, aperture, and shutter speeds. Once a child has gone through these 13 lessons they should be able to take excellent photos. Seeing the world through a child's eyes is an amazing experience.
