Using a Self Storage facility
The term self storage is short for self-service storage. Self storage facilities lease space to individuals, usually storing household goods, or to small businesses, usually storing excess inventory or archived records. The rented spaces, known as units and these units are secured by the tenant's own lock and key. Facility operators do not have casual access to the contents of the space unlike a professional warehouseman. A self storage operator never takes possession, care, custody or control of the contents of the storage rental space. Self storage facility operators usually provide computer-controlled access to rental space areas and many use security cameras.
You can store whatever you need to and as much as you want to within self storage units, however if you are using a self storage unit it is important that you make the most of the space that you have; this may be the difference between you needing a smaller or larger self storage unit. It is important to use valuable space inside drawers and larger appliances. These can be used to store small items such as towels and linen.
It is also a good idea to break down larger items such as bed frames, tables and larger furniture but if you do this remember to keep all of the parts such as screws and smaller items. By breaking down the larger furniture you are making more space within your storage unit, meaning you will be able to fit a lot more in and get more for your money.
Once you have broken the furniture down that can be broken down you should wrap any furniture legs with protective bubble wrap, furniture covers or pads in order to prevent scratching. This process should be carried out on all the furniture that has been broken down as well as all of the furniture that is still totally in tack.
When you have sorted through all of your household possessions and items you are then able to move onto the packaging aspect. When you are carrying out this you should label all of your boxes on all sides so that they are easy to identify and make sure that any fragile boxes are placed on top of heavier boxes. You should also make sure that you don’t over pack boxes as they could become dangerous. Once you are all packed you should tightly seal boxes with packaging tape. This will not only make sure that nothing falls out of the box but it will also make sure that no dust enters the box and causes damage to your items.
It may be an idea, if you can, to leave a walk way down your storage unit so that when you come to needing access to some of your items you can do with ease. Also you should put great care into the placement of items within your storage unit. The items that you need access to frequently should be placed towards the front of your unit and the items that you don’t need as often should be placed towards the back.
