Trip to Drakensberg

by rubinav

The quest for Drakensberg Mountains cover more undulating foothills down side roads that snake along meandering countryside to our first destination Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse. Cleopatra is tucked away in the beautiful Kamberg valley in the Drakensberg mountains, this is a gourmet holiday, where attention to detail is visible everywhere. Dining room and hall are distributed over a trout-filled dam that looks through the water, stunning mountains of the Southern Berg. This is a magical place - secluded luxury hideaway where the most important thing is not to come here if you are on a diet!

Build up to dinner was an event in itself with all the guests meeting at 7 pm for drinks and given the entertainment, a detailed report on a gourmet meal, which was followed by Richard the chef and owner. All the parties are prepared on the premises, some sauces (to highlight the most plates) take up to three days of creation. These three fabulous starters each, in our case a plate meltingly succulent scallops, the rich, baked butternut soup with a cream portion of pesto and a plate of Mozambican King prawns. The small freshening sorbet provided Richard the time for finalization of the basic courses, the development of the plate of choice lamb cuts on Rosti with three different chutneys, and rounded off with a rich chocolate concoction, perfectly offset by the home orange-infused vanilla ice cream.

Breakfast the next morning, followed in a similar style and, although it is difficult to leave we knew that we had to go through some of the food to leave or we would never make the next meal. This food may be the best I've ever eaten but seriously doubt After 2 days, it does not stop food.

Kamberg hosts Bushman rock art site on the ease of access, including the tremendous foot waterfall, and is particularly well-preserved examples of Bushman paintings. It is here that the "Rosetta Stone" of San art first provided archaeologists with the key to interpreting the symbolism of the painting as a spiritual content - showing how hunters gained power from the animals which they killed. Its all professionally explained by references, and although I have seen these pictures before I moved again.

The road to our next stop Antbear proved a bit of hops, mainly because Richard had guided us through the way back. Antbear Guest House is one of those rare gems were found hidden in a network of rural roads in the Drakensberg foothills. Little white washed farm was transformed into a place of artistic elegance. It is hand carved wooden furniture, a labor Conny and Andrews love. Andrew greeted us dressed in very flamboyantly African dress and welcomed us with a cup of tea. It is a humorous character with a passion for entertainment, conversation and alternative living.

Andrew is a dab hand at cooking, too. Nutrition is very different from Cleopatra was definitely not as wealthy, but not least, experience. Dinner was the best Indian food I ever ate with the choice of curry, papdams, onions badjis, sambals and naan bread to boot. Andrew likes the company in the kitchen, and a very different view of this kind of preparation. Its like a circus as he casually juggles the egg turner or adds a handfull of spices, some frying onions. The hosts eat with the guests at one table with candle chandeliers and a fireplace. It is indeed very welcome. For desert Andrew whipped up caramelized cape gooseberries in whiskey with a hint of time. Why Antbear so accessible is a little bit me a mystery to this day is my favorite Antbear Guesthouse everywhere. Armed Conny off to lunch in the Giants Castle Nature Reserve. Giants Castle Drakensberg and the spectacular part of one of my favorite regions. Its less tourism than most other regions, and I always wondered why, as it is about as beautiful as it happens. We wanted so easy to walk around the world have chosen View the 14 km trail with a spectacular 360 ° view of its end.

We had lunch and soaked in the views and returned to the Giants Castle camp for well-earned cappuccino and piece of cheesecake.Dinner Antbear turned back at a Moroccan evening. Again, the food was excellent. Andrews advice and enthusiasm inspires confidence, and we have reorganized some of our plans for the next day was to visit on the battlefield, but I forgot about the Drakensberg Boys Choir. Andrew arranged tickets for us, and it is really not to be missed under any circumstances. The next day was spent in the Champagne Valley another beautiful part of Drakensberg.

For dinner Andrew had Zulu line. Interesting stew with a type of dumpling bread baked in the same pot. Butternut and maize meal and some wild spinach added a touch of color. The fact that I had never seen before was the wild asparagus Soto in lemon and butter with a hint sesame oil. I started to drool even thinking about that now.

The next morning was a guided horse trail through the Drakensberg foothills. I am not a horse enthusiast, but usually with such relaxed horses I would not miss it for anything. This was shortly before lunch, we headed to Montusi Montusi like a hotel with a personal country cottage feeling about it. Submit perfectly positioned to catch the surrounding view, fields, prancing horses and lakes to fish in. Food is excellent, perhaps not so different as unexpectly Antbear but our chargrilled lamb with mint and lemon was perfect.

Our last day in the mountains was spent walking Tugela Gorge Walk below the Amphitheater at the Royal Natal National Park. He took us to the base of Tugela Falls, where the Tugela River plunges 948m (3109 feet) from the plateau, its combined drop making it the second largest falls in the world, and they with us a wonderful view of the amphitheater.

Our trip to Durban, we were guided through the Midlands Meander a place I feel more than a nominal, if you made it possible to allocate precious stones, it makes a proposal. We stopped at Marrakesh Israeli Goats Cheese for a glass of wine and cheese tasting. Excellent light snack after that lovely desire to get here. Our next stop took us down to Karkloof Karkloof Canopy tour.a unique ecological experience of people who are taking on a 3-hour adventure through the magnificent Karkloof indigenous forest. Canopy tour consists of passing from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to 30m above the forest floor.

That was thirty-five when we returned to my apartment in Durban. We are all tired, but satisfied with our week in the Drakensberg mountains. I know that this region offers much more and much more extreme, but for us it was a perfect balance of natural beauty, good living, and only a little excitement.
