Defining Family History: Is There A Skeleton In Your Closet?

This may seem too simple, but the best starting point for defining family history is to talk to your family. Someone may have already started a family tree and got stuck because the research was too costly or it seemed to reach a dead end. This happened many times before the advent of the World Wide Web (Internet). However, you may find things like an address book that belonged to your grandmother or grandfather. That would be a good starting point. It might even contain birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Who knows, your ancestors might have come over on the Mayflower, been involved with the whaling industry, or mined for silver and gold in the west. With genealogy history you will be surprised, fascinated, and even amazed at some of the things your ancestors did.

You could even use old letters as a starting point to trace your genealogy history, and maybe your parents have stored some information about your ancestors, or you may want to check out your local historical society in your town or city who may be able to shed light on where your ancestors lived.

In fact, you could get on to AOL and find a site where all you need to do is input the name and birth as well as death information pertaining to your ancestors and look to see if they have any information in this regard.

You could even find certain sites that hold information about genealogy history by countries while other sites will provide you facilities to view information that other people have dug up, though some of these sites may require you to enroll as a member before you can dig into their databases.

Legacy

Once you complete defining family history, it can serve as a bequest that you can leave to your kids. They will learn a lot about history and foreign lands just by tracing back each member of their forebears, where they lived and what country they immigrated from. Of course, they may not appreciate the hard work and skill it took to gather all the information to create the family tree, but that's OK. Take satisfaction in the final result. Who knows, perhaps one of your children will take some interest and pick up where you left off. It happens more often than not, no kidding.
