Simple Ways to Improve Your Golf Swing

by Hype Williams

There are several easy ways to improve your golf swing. One of the main problems facing golfers who slice the ball is their swing path. They start the club going outside (or away from the body) and on the downswing and then bring the club back inside, which causes the ball to go left to right (for right handed golfers). For golfers who slice the ball, try this tip out on the practice range and see what happens: start the club on the inside and force yourself to go outside on the downswing. In other words, on the back swing move the golf club closer to your body. The golf club should compensate on the downswing by going more to the outside. Also, check to make sure that the wrists are rotating on the downswing, as well. Another simple tip to improve your golf swing is to swing the club with less power; use 70 - 80 percent power instead.

Using a faster swing speed may give you a few extra yards, but you may be in the trees. Make yourself swing slower on the backswing, and use a normal downswing. You may not be hitting the ball as far as you used to, but you also wont be in the trees as often either. Another problem faced by many golfers is poor alignment. This can be fixed simply by double checking the alignment before hitting each and every shot. To test your alignment, stand up to the ball as if you are going to hit it and then place a club parallel to where the feet are aiming then step back and see where the club is pointing. Continue rechecking the alignment and you will improve your golf swing. A problem area concerning the downswing for right handed golfers (opposite for left handed) is a flailing right elbow.

On the downswing the right elbow should not be pointing away from you, but rather it should be tucked in close to the body. A great way to test if you have a flailing right elbow is to place a golf towel under it and take a few practice swings. If the towel is dropping to the ground every time then you may want to think about tucking your elbow in to improve your golf swing. Another tip concerning the downswing is to clear your hips out. If you do not clear the hips out before the club reaches the ball the shot will not be accurate. A way to practice this tip is to have the club in such a position as if you are just beginning the downswing. As you continue the downswing clear the hips out before the club touches the ground.

To improve your golf swing, follow the tips so you will be able to pinpoint where some of the flaws in your swing are so you can fix them.
