Setting the Tone with Office Furniture

by Mark Etinger

Management style plays a vast role in the office tone and demeanor, but it is not the only factor that can affect how employees interact with one another and their superiors. The layout of the office and its furniture plays its own role and business owners need to consider this before designing an office layout. Not only does it affect interactions, office furniture has an impact on the overall vibe and mood people feel while at work.

When people think about office furniture, cubicles usually come to mind. But along with that thought, many probably also remember the movie "Office Space." Cubicles are great space savers and can easily be rearranged time and time again to fit the contours of the building. However, cubicles with three walls are closed off; at least that's how they feel to those that inhabit them. Each person is separated, encompassed in his or her own personal space. It's great if you want extremely high efficiency, but some employees may feel isolated instead of safely in their own personal bubble. It is also allows for less talking between employees, verbally at least. If your employees tend to work individually with little collaboration between departments, cubicles can be the ideal option. If that isn't the case you may want to consider other options.

What if your business actually thrives on teamwork? Cubicles become far less than ideal. Look for open space workstations. This type of office furniture will make it easy for employees to roll over to one another's desks and discuss the task at hand. Team projects will be a breeze when workers aren't forced to navigate the maze of an office full of cubicles. Put up dividers between separate departments so the office doesn't become one giant hub for constant chatter and distractions.

Perhaps a mixture of different office furniture is ideal for certain businesses. There may be workers who prefer the solitude, while others thrive in an open environment. Consider speaking with employees and getting their opinions. The last thing you want to do is create an unpleasant environment for your workers.

Completely open spaces often give off a more relaxed office vibe, while cubicles may seem rigid. Of course this also a completely psychological aspect. It's easy for our brains to quite literally departmentalize office space, but it's still important to keep in mind. Balance the dynamic with furniture accents and décor. Making the environment a welcoming space can have a huge impact on aa employee's mentality. Does your office feel like a somber place with all neutral colors? Or does it seem more like a playground where workers might feel a bit too relaxed? Take these factors into consideration before you set your heart on office furniture.
