Correct Ways To Clean Anodized Aluminum

by Charity Gilbert

Anodizing is a process used to thicken the oxide layer on the surface of metal for the purpose of corrosion and wear resistance. Using this process, Anodized aluminum is created and is used to make pots and pans, car parts, aircraft parts and household objects like flashlights. While anodized aluminum is quite durable, after time, perhaps it will become stained or scratched, or it may just look dull. Polishing anodized aluminum should bring back its shine and then make it look new again.

One method to clean anodized aluminum is to first de-anodize it to get rid of stains and oxidation, then sand, buff and coat it. Don't use this method for cookware or for aluminum that will be regularly exposed to the elements. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of drain cleaner crystals to a pan of warm water as a way to de-anodize tge aluminum. Place your anodized aluminum pieces in this bath for a minute or so, then lift it out and wipe off the residue before submerging it again for another minute. Continue this cycle until the entire anodized surface is gone, leaving a clean (but still scratched) aluminum surface. Rinse properly with clean water, then sand out the scratches with 800-grit sandpaper. Buff to a shine and clear coat the piece to protect it.

As a way to clean anodized aluminum cookware, make use of mild dish soap, warm water and a non-abrasive pad. Perhaps, you will not remove all of the stains off, but scrubbing it with an abrasive cleaner or tool will scratch the surface and render it less effecient. There are a few anodized aluminum cleaners available which you can use; look for it at your local hardware store and use it according to directions.

To clean heavily-pitted, scratched and dirty anodized aluminum, use a clear protective coating, available at any hardware store. First, make a paste having a non-abrasive powdered cleanser, wet down your aluminum piece and make use of the paste with a non-abrasive pad. Scrub slowly and rinse the piece very well. Polishing anodized aluminum is really simple: add 1 to 2 ounces of gentle dish detergent to a gallon of warm water and scrub the piece together with the solution using a soft brush. Rinse it well with clean, warm water, next, totally dry the surface. Dampen a small microfiber cloth with denatured alcohol, on offer at the hardware store, and wipe the aluminum piece to get rid of any residual oils or fingerprints before you apply the protective coating. Be sure the coating applicator is wet, and also apply the product to the piece in even strokes. Give it time to dry thoroughly before adding another coat if desired.
