When Learning To Sew You Will Need The Right Sewing Supplies

by JoAnn Gagnon

Anyone who wishes to learn to sew will want the correct beginner sewing supplies. That is true whether you are learning to sew on a machine or learning by hand. Many of the basic articles for sewing are the same.

Picking the right machine is important. Unless one already has a machine, it is a wise idea to select one that isn't complicated to work with; that is, one with just 3 or 4 extras beyond the basics. A good, basic machine can straight stitch, zigzag stitch, and make a buttonhole. As your ability improves, you may desire a machine with features, but a basic machine serves most folks just fine, no matter their skill level. I personally sewed with a basic sewing machine with just four or five stitches for over 15 years and could make most anything I wanted with it, even sew heirloom items.

It is always a smart thing to buy a new machine or maybe one that has been lightly used. If one does prefer to select a used one, be sure to also get the owner's manual. If the sewing machine doesn't have one, one can usually download a copy through the internet. Educating yourself with the machine's instruction manual is the first step if you want to learn to sew correctly and with less hinderance with the machine.

Scissors are one of the sewing supplies that everyone needs. One must have a pair that is only used for cutting fabric and thread, they aren't for any other use. Dressmaking shears become dull very quickly when they're used for cutting paper products and other items. It is sensible to invest in a select pair of dressmaking shears from the start. Be sure to fit the size of the scissors to the youngster's hand size.

A measuring tape is also another of the essential sewing supplies. This isn't the metal measuring tape used in carpentry. This one is a seamstress's measuring tape. It is pliable and constructed from plastic or cloth. The cloth type is more precise, because the plastic one can stretch over time.

You'll also need patterns and a good instructional sewing book as you learn to sew. As the years go by, a few people design their own patterns, but the majority of us stay with using patterns for our sewing projects. Patterns are among the lesser costly sewing supplies. You can find one to sew practically any style of clothing item. The best counsel for those just beginning is not to choose something with complicated parts.

You will obviously have need of thread, needles, and fabric to learn to sew. The majority of patterns provide suggestions for thread and material options. You will be able to explore in time. For your first projects, stick with their suggestions. You will be better satisfied with the results.
