CPAP MASK INFO

The CPAP mask is your direct link to the treatment you are supposedly receiving. If, however, the mask fits poorly, is uncomfortable, or otherwise doesn’t work for you then your treatment isn’t really… happening. My research finds three characteristics of your sleeping style that can quickly narrow the field for mask selection:
Activity during sleep. Once your treatment really starts working you may find that tossing and turning will be a thing of the past. In the meantime, you may need a mask that can move with you and maintain a good seal. For a nasal pillow style, I've had success with the Fisher & Paykel Opus 360 mask. For a nasal style mask, consider the ResMed Mirage Activa.
Breathing style. The way you breathe determines the mask’s coverage. The most popular masks blow air through the nose only. Some folks, however, find that they sleep with their mouths open causing the air pressure to short-circuit out the mouth. I know this from personal experience … my wife says I sound like a wind tunnel some nights! If you find the nasal-pillow or nasal styles to be attractive, but sleep with your mouth open then try combining the mask with a chin strap. If breathing through your mouth is a necessity, consider the ResMed Mirage Liberty or RedMed Quattro FX full-face masks because they cover your nose and mouth. These masks are also highly related from many users.
Fear of claustrophobia. Wait, isn’t that claustrophobia-phobia? When embarking on treatment for sleep apnea many of us — myself included — aren’t really excited to strap a bulky device to our face that is tethered to a machine sitting on the night stand. I fondly call it "my plumbing". Once I became more accustomed to the treatment and the benefits it gave me, these fears really dissolved. Instead, I eventually became uncomfortable sleeping without it! Initially, though, these fears may be more pronounced — a mask that stays out of your line-of-sight may be the right solution. There are masks in each of the styles that stay out of your view while they're on your face, including: -Nasal-pillow style: Mirage Swift FX -Nasal style: Mirage FX. While technically not out of view, I am personally using this mask right now and I am finding it does not feel claustrophobic. Its architecture is very trim and not bulky. -Full-face style: ResMed Quattro FX.
There are literally hundreds of masks to choose from and these choices can be overwhelming. Focusing on a few key aspects of your sleeping style and needs can help you quickly narrow these choices to a manageable selection. Once you're there, your equipment provider often has test-fit masks that you can try to make selection even easier.
