When not to Bluff
Poker Tips
Bluffing should probably not be a knee jerk reaction. It takes a certain feel for a table, the players, the atmosphere, all those things should come into effect. When doing it keep in mind that other players are also trying to steal pots or their own opportunity to bluff. It only works when you get away with it, so don't overuse this play. Here are some times when you outright should not bluff.
1. Against bad players. As much as they love to bluff, they love to catch someone in a bluff. There is an old saying "You can't bluff an idiot." They're much more likely to "keep you honest" because they don't see overcards or cards that can beat their hand. They only see what they have. It's much more profitable to play straight up in these games. 2. Against a dangerous flop. If the flop has an Ace, chances are that someone has a pair of aces. Aces have an uncanny ability to make if past pre-flop, even to a raise. A great deal of players think A-anything is a good hand. Also, you may want to think about betting against 3 card flushes or straights on the board.(5,6,7) 3. Against multi players. Chances are that someone has something that they are going to see to the river. If they flop any of it, especially in a ring game, with tons of players they will probably see the river because of pot odds.
4. Been caught bluffing. The light is on across the table on you. You've been labeled as a poor bluffer already. Play solid if you are capable of playing solid. Start rebuilding a reputation as a straight player so you can eventually try a bluff again later. 5. You lost a big hand or have lost a series of hands. You may have received a few bad beats, maybe on tilt, but other players will expect you to be on tilt, and you will get more callers. 6. When players expect you to. Don't be the idiot. Good players will pick you off in a second. A huge tell can be bluffing in obvious situations against players who know them. Always consider this rule before attempting a bluff. 7. You are in the blind or limped in. You really have to evaluate the flop, but limping in or being in the blind, most players will think you have a poor hand and may be expecting your bluff.
