Retro Charm Of Pavement Signs

by Timothy Capper

The A Board is a bit of a modern anomaly, they dont have flashy lights, digital screens. They dont need a keyboard to type in the message, they dont consume electricity and they dont cost a fortune. The A board only needs a flat surface to stand on, comes in a variety of styles and all you need is a piece of chalk to convey your message direct to passing trade. You can be creative or direct with your message

The A boards of today have now acquired that quaint retro feel and charm. The A board has been the face of the local pub and restaurant for a long time and still are, with the soup of the day and the local ale on offer that day or week. The A-boards of today are very much like the ones of yesterday. In a world of galloping change, these folding boards have remained practically unchanged since their birth. Like dinosaurs on the pavement, watching patiently as the city soars around them!

Yet despite this appearance of comforting sameness, a few innovations have crept in that may not be obvious to the casual passerby, but have improved the performance and durability of A-boards. Of course, the more traditional kind are still around, simple wooden frames holding a chalkboard with a chain between the two halves to maintain that familiar A shape. These are still the most common kind of A-board, and probably always will be. A natural choice of material for A-boards is usually wood, beech or oak.

Of course, wood does have a limited lifespan, and those who plan to use their A-board signs for many years may decide to opt for a model with a steel frame and legs. This is only a small departure from the traditional design, and still maintains that retro look. Steel, metal will not suffer from rot or mold growth but the metal may need a touch up on occassion.

Some of the newer models of A-boards have also acquired a dual purpose, the display of either posters or written messages. This takes advantage of a basic fact about the design of traditional A-boards, the fact that while they have a back side and a front side, only one of these is generally used. The back sides of the boards are always turned inward and never seen. In the new ones, the board can be folded over so that the inside becomes the outside. One of the surfaces has a chalkboard while the other has a sheet of durable APET plastic, behind which posters can be inserted.

An old friend who has stood on the streets for a decade and looks set for many more yeras ahead. A Pavement sign in front of a shop or eatery will always be a bit of retro charm.
