Assessing Your Fall Arrest Anchors And Equipment

by Adriana Noton

Fall arrest anchors are designed to provide the needed support should someone fall while working at a dangerous height. OSHA regulates the safety requirements in the United States and other countries have similar requirements based on their own laws. While it is easy enough to have the equipment, it will do you no good if it is not in good working order. Many pieces end up rusting, fraying, or simply degrading due to be stored in the elements or from overuse. Learning how to inspect the equipment prior to use can be a lifesaver.

The equipment should be inspected before and after every use. Many people simply trust that their equipment is in good working condition and fail to check. Unfortunately, this leads to many deaths every year. Waiting until a line or harness snaps is too late. If you are a company owner, this can end up costing you financially as well.

Harnesses can fray after a period of use. When inspecting this piece you need to look for frayed edges, broken fibers, and other signs of wear. The D-rings also need to be inspected for cracks or breaks. The buckles should not have frayed or broken stitching. Grommets should not be bent or loose. If there are holes that are not made by the manufacturer the harness is weakened. Any of these issues should be enough to get a new harness.

Snap hooks and lanyards must be in top condition. The rope for the lanyard should not be cut, frayed, or show excessive wear. Lanyards and snap hooks often receive a lot of abuse. These should be inspected carefully for cracks and wear. If you are using a shock-absorbing lanyard check for similar cracks. These should also be replaced if they are not in perfect working condition.

Testing self-retracting lifelines prior to use is easy to do. The lines should be pulled out several feet and allowed to slowly retract. If it does not retract properly, replace the device completely. These devices are not easily repaired and should be serviced by a manufacturer's representative or at a service center.

Roof anchors should be inspected before relying on them to save your life. If the device is already installed, be sure to inspect for wear that may indicate degraded use. Attaching a lanyard and pulling to be sure it will withstand force is a good idea prior to use. If the device does not appear to be installed properly, notify someone who can verify its usability. If these points give way, your life may be in danger.

Storing and cleaning the equipment properly will extend its life. Many crews have a habit of simply tossing harnesses in the back of a truck. If the equipment that is designed to save your life is mistreated, it can easily fail on you. Treat it well and it will treat you well.

The equipment used with fall arrest anchors needs to be properly maintained in order to work correctly. OSHA requires a 5000 pound limit because a fall can exert this much force on the equipment. Because lives are at stake, it is critical to inspect the equipment prior to use. Look for frayed edges, loose anchors, and other wear that could weaken the equipment.
