Website Design With A Focus On SEO - Search Engine Optimization

by Chad Eisenhart

On page optimization for a website is focused on a variety of optimization factors related to the ranking of websites. It is process of improving the visibility of a website responding to organic searches. The basics of these on-page factors of SEO (search engine optimization) intelligently played by webmasters for ranking websites on Search Engine Result Page (SERP). Simply speaking these are well assumed inputs relevant to searchers' quest.

On-page optimization - With the objective of improving ranking of the website, the designer and SEO experts optimize websites for quick identification and listing. Importantly, ranking on the first page is vital since users rarely go to page 2 or more of their search results. So usage of carefully selected keywords is crucial to optimize the website. Search results are also influenced by back links from other websites and from social media platforms.

Choosing targeted keywords makes the beginning of on-page optimization. These are words or a string of words likely to be used by the searcher. Long-tail keywords are quite popular now-a-days because they tend to face less competition. Long tail keywords also tend to drive more qualified leads to a website. They also allow the business or marketer to offer a more relevant search result to the user.

Google offers a free service called "Google Keyword Tool." This should be a first step for a webmaster when evaluating what keywords and searches they want the website to rank for. With Google's Keyword Tool you are able to see how much traffic is generated both locally and globally for a specific search term and get ideas for other ways users are searching for that term.

In the past website design had been concerned about the density of keywords; the number of times a keyword is used on a page. But with updates to Google's algorithm known as Panda or Penguin, the ranking result is becoming more dependent on the quality of social signals a website receives. As such, on-page optimization from the angle of social media is of greater concern to webmasters.

Building links - Inbound links to a website heighten the search ranking. Despite the update of algorithmic structure of Google search, inbound links still have a strong influence on ranking. When talking about search engine rankings Google searches account for about 68% of all searches. Being such a powerful force most marketers focus on satisfying Google requirements. Bing and Yahoo and Google combined account for close to 96% of all searches.

Google has recently penalized keyword stuffing and over on page optimizations with it most recent algorithm updates over the last year. They also look at inbound links as a vote from other websites to the value of the content on that website. Links (also known as inbound links or back links) from other websites are referred to as off-page optimization.

Webpage Tagging - Tags on a web page describe to the user and the search engines what a page is about. The main tags a website designer should focus on are: Title tags - Title tags play the most important SEO function telling the search engine what a page contains with its unique constitution. It should be a keyword rich set with less than 70 characters containing primary keyword, secondary keyword and brand name sequentially. Meta Description - Meta description plays the role of attracting viewers to reach particular pages. These tags describe pages in snippets within 156 characters. Google most often displays this information on search engine result page. H1 Tags - H1 tags give headings to the websites. Search engines first try understanding a page from these tags that incorporate relevant information. Image ALT Tags - Alt image tags are associated with images on a website. These are useful both to the search engines and to the user. To the search engines robots they cannot determine what an image is about so they rely on the alt tags. This is a good place to use your keywords, as long as they are relevant to the image. For the user that hovers their mouse over the image the alt text is displayed. For the sight impaired the alt text is read out loud and thus extremely beneficial to the user.
